SLA Research Methods Over 35 Years: Looking Back and Ahead

WEN Qiu-fang, WANG Li-fei
(School of Foreign Studies, Nanjing University, Jiangsu 210093, China)
Abstract: This paper gives an overview of the development of SLA research methods over 35 years. Based on the
quantitative and qualitative studies reported in the TESOL Quarterly between 1967-2000, two changes in research
methods are identified: (1) Quantitative methods came of age in the mid 1980s and qualitative methods, in the late
1990s. (2) Microgenetic analysis and contrastive interlanguage analysis are emerging as new research methods.
Finally, the problems in SLA research methods in China along with suggestions for further improvement are
raised.
Key words: SLA research; research methods; quantitative studies; qualitative studies
