Abstract
A belief in living and conscious nature was a worldwide social
phenomenon, as it was found in traditional cultures throughout
the world. Such belief has declined, been forgotten and
ridiculed when the scientific thought has become mainstreamed.
Different perspectives inevitably lead to different actions. While
the older one guided human to treat nature with high respect
and gentleness, the new one gears to the pursuit of human glory
over the nature through possible violent means. Different
actions also lead to different results. Most of ancient
civilisations continued for thousands of years in peace with the
nature. But the modern civilisation has faced severe
environmental crises which seriously jeopardise it survival only
in a few hundred years after its birth. The new science of the
twentieth century calls for a revaluation of the Newtonian view
of nature. Recent scientific discoveries clearly indicate living
and cognitive qualities of nature, as long known by many
ancient cultures. This implies a great ignorance of the modern
culture. For human to avoid the likely catastrophe, it is crucial
that our worldview and relationship with the nature need to be
urgently changed.
