[INDEK, ENGINEERING REFERENCE 732-919-7600TYPE SM-F EXPLOSION RELIEF VENTS — DESCRIPTION
Type SH-F explosion relief vents are true blowout type assemblies
designed to NFPA-68 recomendations. These inclede a lightweight,
(under 2.5 pounds per square foot) panel, a relisble release system,
anda means to restrain the panel after blowout.
‘The pane is a honeycomb core aluminum faced assembly with a perimeter
seal track and side mounted sponge seal. It weighs typically less than
2.0 pounds per square foot and is strong and impervious to vibration.
It 1s designed to be reusable and docs not degrade over time.
‘The release system consists of a number of Fracture Releases, as designed
for the application, mounted on studs attached to the housing around the
panel perimeter. The Practure releases are mechanical fuses in a leaf -
spring form. For a-certain percentage of their rating and deflection
they act as a leaf spring clip holding the panel assembly tightly
4n place with good seal contact betveen the panel and housing. If there
is an explosion the overload breaks the releases, instantly freeing the
panel. Since- there are no holes in the panel there is no alignment
problem. A change in the release rating 1s only a change of the Fracture
Releases hich are available over a vide xange. The fixed rating and
no moving parts avoids calibration and maintenance concerns. And if
the panel is blown out only the releases need be replaced; 2 small fraction
of the total assembly cost.
If the panel is blown out short cable tethers restrain it. These can be
arranged to hinge the movement of the panel in the most advantageous
direction for the application. A special modification uses four cables
to make the panel blow straight out and deflect the blast sideways to
help protect nearby passageways or equipment.
Any specific model of the type SM-F vent includes in its designation the
vent opening size and the number of releases.

REV: 04/02Model "Ww" Fracture Releases
Fracture Releases are leaf springs that break when
overloaded. The deflection required for this is
about 7 mm (.275") and the force rating is as shown
by the model number.
‘The releases have split fingers that deflect at
different rates. This provides an indication of the
force applied and a means of balancing the releases.
‘The ideal setting is that which seats a vent panel
or device firmly while deflecting the center finger
and long life. This

values from, sequential or "cascade" failure. This
effect cannot be totally avoided however and multiple
release openings will normally be at about 75% of the
indicated force. (Number of releases times the rating).
