1 CALCULATION OF FIRE MAIN SYSTEM

1.1 CALCULATION OF FIRE PUMP'S CAPACITY

Based on Germanischer Lloyd Part 1 Section 12 E, minimum capacity for 1 fire system pump in ship
must be greater than 25 m/h
So, the minimum required capacity of fire pump according to GL Rules, Chapter 2, Page 12 - 11, Section
12, E, table 12.2 is defined by :

Q = (3.8 x 10) x dH , where : Q = min. requirment capacity of fire pump

= (3.8 x 10) x 111.204 dH =
theoretical diameter of the bilge main
= 46.99222 m/h (see Section 11, N. formula for main
GL I - Part I - Chapter 2 Section 12 E. Table 12.2 bilge pipe)
= 111.204 mm

1.2 The
CALCULATION OF FIRE should
following formula PUMP'SbeDIAMETER
used as
guidance for the sizing of the fire main:
2.3.1
dF = 0.8 x dH , where : dH =
theoretical diameter of the bilge main
= 0.8 x 111.204 (see Section 11, N. formula for main
= 88.96336 mm bilge pipe)
GL I - Part I - Chapter 2 Section 12 E. 2.3.1 = internal

Because the pipes is located in Cargo Holds, accomodation and machinery space, based on GL I - Part I
- Chapter 2 Section 11 Table 11.5 (attached) about minimum thickness of Bilge system's pipes is on
grup M. It will be explained on table 11.6 (attached)

Group M
No. Outside Diameter (da) Thickness

2 from 38,0 3.6
3 from 51,0 4
4 from 76,1 4.5
5 from 177,8 5

Minimum thickness's requirement for fire system's pipe :

Grup : M
Outside Diameter (da) : from 76.1 mm (because the value of d = 88.963 mm)
Thickness : 4.5 mm

1.3 CALCULATION OF FIRE PUMP'S HEAD

- Head static of pump
head static pump is calculated from pump inlet till the end of discharge, in this case,its calculated till
of top deck
So, head static of pump (hs) = 19.3 m

- Head pressure of pump (hp)

based on GL Rules Part 1 Chapter 2 Section 12 table 2.3, minimum discharge pressure at nozzle is not
to be less than :

Table 12.3
Type of GRT= 4394,4
GRT Pressure at nozzle [N/mm]
Vessel
<6000 0.25
Cargo ships
6000 0.27 so is chosen 0.25
Passenger <4000 0.3
ships 4000 0.4

we can make assumption in suction is atmosfer pressure,so

head because of pressure difference (hp) 0.25 N/mm
= 250000 N/m
= 24.4 m

- Head Velocity (Hv)

Head Velocity (Hv) is difference velocity of fluid between in suction line in suction and discharge of
pump. we can make assumption not difference between suction and discharge about flow velocity.
Hv = 0 m

- Head Loss
Head losses are the sum of head major and minor on both of suction and discharge.
Head Losses = Head suction + Head Discharge

a) Calculation of Suction Head

- Major Head Losses
Reynold number (Rn)
Rn = (vs*dH)/u Q/A = V 1.479E-05
= 1.5 m/s x 0.105 / 8.2 x 10 V = 1,5 m/s
= 192153.3 (turbulen flow)

Major losses (hf) = x L x v2 / (D x 2g)

Where :
L = Length of suction's pipe 14 m (estimation)
g = gravitation 9.8 m/s
D= inside diameter of fire main's pipe= 105.3 mm 0.1053
So Major losses (hf) = x L x v2 / (D x 2g)
= 0.052 x 14 x 1.5 / (105.3 x 10 x 2 x 9.8)
= 0.7936507937 m

Maka, Minor Losses (hm) = nk x v / 2g

b) Calculation of Discharge Head

Major losses (hf) = x L x v2 / (D x 2g)

Where :
L = Length of discharge's pipe 103 m (estimation)
g = gravitation 9.8 m/s
D = inside diameter of fire main's pipe= 105.3 mm 0.1053
So Major losses (hf) = x L x v2 / (D x 2g)

= (15 x 1.5) / (2 x 9.8)
= 1.7 m

Total Head Discharge

Total Head Discharge = Minor losses (hm) + Major losses (hf)
= 7.5 m

- Total Head Losses

Total Head Losses = Head Suction + Head Discharge
= 2.418 + 7.5
= 9.81 m

- Head Total
Head Total = hs + hv + hp + Head Losses
= 19.3 +0 +24.4 +9.96
= 53.45 m

- Based on those calculation above, we can conclude that :

*Minimum value of fire main's head is : 53.5 m
* Minimum value of fire main's capacity is : 47 m/h
(just for the main fire pump)

CO2 Fire - Extunguisher

The calculation of the necessary quantity of CO2 is to be based on

a gas volume of 0,56 m3 per kg of CO2 (GL 2013, Chapter 2, Section 12, G 1)

40% if tge gross volume of the largest space is less than

40% of the horizontal area of the space concerned

Volume = 40% x Largest Space Where = 560

= 224 m3

Specific volume of CO2 is 0,56 m3/kg and the density is 1,977 m3/kg, so mass of CO2:
Mass = rho x Volume
= 1107.12

3 CALCULATION OF EMERGENCY FIRE SYSTEM

3.1 CALCULATION OF EMERGENCY FIRE PUMP'S CAPACITY

Based on Germanischer Lloyd Part 1 Section 12 E, On ships of 2000 GRT, the emergency fire pumps
must be capable of delivering at least 40 % of the total capacity specified for the main fire pumps.
So, the minimum required capacity of emergency fire pump according to GL Rules, Chapter 2, Section
12, E 1.4.1 is defined by :

Q = 40% x Q fire main pump , where : Q = capacity of fire pump

= 40% x 50
= 20 m/h
GL I - Part I - Chapter 2 Section 12 E 1.4.1

3.2 CALCULATION OF EMERGENCY FIRE PUMP'S HEAD

Head of the emergency fire pump is as same as the head of fire main system.
So, the head of Emergency Fire Pump is 65 m
