Crystallographic features of a recent Japanese sword were investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction
and SEM/EBSD (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Electron Back Scattered Diffraction) studies. Optical
microscopic study showed that blade zone of the sword contained lath martensite both on the surface and in the
cross section. The X-ray diffraction study illustrated that the crystallographic structure of the sword was
composed of martensite (a') and a small fraction of retained austenite (y), The crystallographic parameters
corresponding to the tetragonal (bet) martensite and cubic austenite cells were estimated by the WPPF analysis,
of X-ray data. EBSD studies showed good agreement with the X-ray data and revealed that the microstructure
‘was fine grained lath martensite with irrationally arranged prior austenite grains and packets, although the
blocks were fairly observed. Present study revealed that the traditional method of preparation (ta‘ara method)
offered the special features to the Japanese sword, unlike the ordinary steel.

In the present work, Potassium di-hydrogen phosphate (KDP) has been successfully grown in pure form and
doped with EDTA (0.5 mol %) by low temperature solution growth technique and growth kineties of KDP
crystals in doped and undoped solutions were measured and analyzed. The induction period t was measured and
from this critical nucleation parameters like energy of formation of the critical nucleus (AG*), radius of the
critical nucleus r*, nucleation rate J, number of the molecules in the critical nucleus i* have been calculated
based on the classical theory of nucleation. The grown crystals have been subjected to study the mechanical
property. The microhardness test was carried out on (100) plane. The load dependent hardness and work
hardening coefficient was measured.
