DENSITY

Objective: To determine the density of fresh water and other

liquid by volumetric method.

Apparatus: metric beam balance/Digital Balance

graduated cylinder/beaker

meter stick

water and other liquid

Theory: The mass density, of a liquid is a predominant in

fluid flow. It is defined as the mass per unit volume.

M

V

The standard density of fresh water = 1000 kg/m3

= 1 g/cc

Apparatus used for density determination

Procedure:

1. Determine the correct weight of the empty graduated

cylinder.

2. Fill up the cylinder with water, record the volume and

weight of the cylinder with water.

3. Do this for several trials, filling up the cylinder

with water under different volumes.

4. Using consistent unit of weights and volumes

corresponding to each trial, determine the trial densities as

M/V in kg per cubic meter or gram per cubic centimeter.

5. Do another exercise by using other liquid.

6. Tabulate the data and identify the liquid used.

Computation:

Let V = volume of liquid (m3 or cm3)

Me = mass of empty cylinder (kg or g)

MT = mass of empty cylinder + liquid (kg or g)

M = mass of liquid (kg or g)

M = MT Me

the values of its density, specific volume, and specific gravity
relative to water at 15 C ?
2. The specific gravity of glycerin is 1.26. Compute
its density and specific weight.
3. If 5,300 liters of a certain oil weighs 43.86 KN,
