Many Filipinos are fond of drinking coffee for breakfast, snack time, and even after lunch.
It has already been a part of their everyday routine
to grab some coffee at the store, office, or even at coffee shops such as Starbucks. With this being said, the demand for coffee domestically is high. Study shows that Pinoys drink 0.608 cups of coffee a day per capitaor 222 cups of coffee per person annually. While there are areas in the Philippines known for their coffee production such as Batangas and Benguet, local coffee production is not what it used to be. The Philippines used to be the fourth biggest coffee producer in the world during the early 19th century, but this production was stopped for how many decades because of a disease, until a revival of the industry in the 1950s happened.Today, the Philippines is still one of the few countries that produce the four most varieties of coffee: Arabica, Liberica, Excelsa and Robusta said the Philippine Coffee Board. In line this, many local farmers are starting to venture into coffee plantation especially in Benguet. The municipality of Tublay in Benguet is investing on its coffee industry as a long-term strategy for disaster response and resiliency, and to achieve the strategy, wider coffee plantations are needed. They started to plant coffee seeds at their communal forest to make their mountains productive while conserving their watersheds. A more reason to bank in coffee industry is that a hectare of coffee plantation can provide an income of 300, 000 for farmers, this is a research conducted by the Benguet State University. Tublay has partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and was able to get coffee processing equipment to improve the performance and production of small and medium enterprises to capture better markets. Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRM) Officer Abner Lawangen said optimizing coffee growing as an alternative source of income in times of disaster is an adaptive measure in making communities resilient to the effects of climate change which greatly affects the vegetable industry. **Coffee Industry does not only helps in our environment but also gives sustainable livelihood for Filipino farmers especially in Benguet as an alternative for vegetable planting.
