For starters, let's fix the low framerate and the sound glitching:

Go to the game's properties in the Steam client: disable the Steam overlay(1),
click on "Set launch options", put
-compat-on
and confirm(2,3).
Open
\Steam\steamapps\common\Broken Sword 4\system\custom.ini
in a text editor and look for this line:
m_uiUseExtraProcessors = 0
Change 0 to 1 and save(4);
Open
\Steam\steamapps\common\Broken Sword 4\system\compat.ini
in a text editor and look for these lines:
m_bDSoundLocDeferOn
and
m_bDSoundLocForceSoftwareOn
Change the first line's value to 0

Just read the instructions on the site. It's very easy to use: after you copy
dsound.dll and dsound.ini to the same directory as masseffect.exe
(steamapps\common\Mass Effect\Binaries), edit dsound.ini and set:

eax1 = false
eax2 = false

Then in-game, go to the sound settings screen and enable the "hardware audio"
checkbox. Restart the game. 5.1 sound is now fully working.

This should work with all sound cards. Also, the sound in the game becomes much
cleaner even if you're not using a 5.1 setup. Sounds not audible before are now
audible (like the "pop" sound on new journal entries) and the hard to hear
background voices are now clearer. Effects like weapons fire were also muffled
before, while now they sound correct.
