What Are the New Brown Wires in

the Diagnostic Connector Used For?
This question came from a tech who works for one of our ATC
Freightliner customers. Im sure that there are other techs who
are asking themselves the same question.
central gateway (cgw) Module
Beginning with Cascadia model Freightliner truck, a translator
module called a Central Gateway (See Figure 1) was incorporated
into the electronic system of the truck. Cascadia electronics
include four electronic control modules (ECUs) that communicate
on a Controller Area Network (CAN) datalink called the Cabin
CAN. These Cabin CAN ECUs include the SAM Cabin, SAM
Chassis, Modular Switch Field (MSF) Master, and the Central
Gateway. These controllers are responsible for controlling most
of the vehicles systems. The Central Gateways job is to translate
information passed along the Cabin CAN network into language
that can be broadcast over two other datalinks, the J1708/J1587
datalink and the J-1939 datalink. It also translates data from the
J1939 and J1708/J1587 datalinks into language that can be
used by the Cabin CAN ECUs.
diagnostic caN
The ServiceLink application that is accessed on the access-
freightliner secure website is the communication tool used to
communicate with the ECUs on the vehicle. However, it doesnt
communicate with the Cabin CAN ECUs directly. The Cabin CAN
datalink is not connected to the trucks 9-pin diagnostic connector
that ServiceLink connects through. ServiceLink communicates
to the Central Gateway through an additional datalink called the
Diagnostic CAN. It is a point-to-point datalink that is connected
from pins H and J in the 9-pin Diagnostic Connector to pins 18
and 23 of the 24-pin connector on the Central Gateway. The
Diagnostic CAN is a twisted pair of brown wires, one having a
white stripe and the other having a light blue stripe (see Figure 2).
This datalink is terminated inside the Central Gateway by a 60
resistor connected between cavities 18 and 23. ServiceLink

Because EPA2010 and newer engines do not broadcast informa-
tion on the J1708/J1587, any J1708/J1587 device that needs
engine information, must have it translated from the J1939 data 9-Pin diagnostic connector Pinouts

There is only one fault code related to the Diagnostic CAN. It is
broadcast by the Central Gateway. It is SA37-SPN 523510-FMI 31
