 ЧУДЕСНЕ УСПЕННЯ ПРЕСВЯТОЇ
БОГОРОДИЦІ

День смерти Пресвятої Богородиці зветься в нашій
Церкві Успення, бо її тіло після смерти не зотліло, але
разом з душею було взяте до неба. Не маємо історичних
даних, як довго Божа Мати ще перебувала на землі після
Христового Вознесення, ані коли, де і як вона померла, бо
про це святе Євангеліє нічого не згадує. Основу празника
Успення творять священна традиція Церкви від
апостольських часів, апокрифічні книги, постійна віра
Церкви та однозгідна думка святих Отців і Вчителів
Церкви першого тисячоліття християнства.
Найдавніше записане передання, що говорить про
смерть Пресвятої Богородиці, є у творі, який у Західній
Церкві відомий як Перехід Святої Марії, а на Сході той сам
твір має назву "Святого Йоана Богослова слово на Успення
Святої Богородиці". Автор цього твору невідомий. Одні
історики думають, що цей твір походить з кінця другого
або початку третього сторіччя, а інші — з кінця шостого
віку.
З цього твору довідуємося про святе й чудесне
Успення Пресвятої Богородиці. Ось його коротка історія:
"Три дні перед смертю явився Пречистій Діві Марії
архангел Гавриїл і звістив від її Сина Ісуса Христа час її
переходу до вічности. На день її смерти в чудесний спосіб
зібралися в Єрусалимі апостоли, хоч були розсіяні по
різних краях світу. Не було тільки апостола Томи. Божа
Мати висловила бажання, що хоче бути похована в
Гетсиманії коло своїх батьків і свого Обручника Йосифа.
Сам Христос у супроводі ангелів і святих прийшов по душу
своєї Пресвятої Матері. Апостоли при співі побожних
гимнів на своїх раменах занесли її тіло до гробу і три дні
від нього не відходили. Третього дня прийшов здалека
апостол Тома й дуже бажав ще востаннє поглянути на
Пресвяту Богородицю. Коли ж гріб відкрили, то її тіла там
уже не було, а тільки похоронні ризи.
Тепер усі зрозуміли, що вона воскресла і з тілом та
душею її взято на небо".
Є свідчення, що з початку VI ст. у храмі Успення в
Гетсиманії був гріб Пресвятої Богородиці, тому церкву на
Сіоні стали вважати місцем її Успення. Однак на сьогодні
історики не знають про місце її смерти, та де є її гріб. Одні
доводять, що вона померла в Єрусалимі, інші ж твердять —
в Ефесі, куди нібито її узяв з собою святий євангелист Йоан
Богослов. У Ефесі ще сьогодні показують дім, де, згідно з
традицією, перебувала Божа Мати.
Літургійний культ Пресвятої Богородиці
починається від Ефеського Собору 431 року, який окреслив
догму про її богоматеринство. У творах святих Отців до
четвертого століття нема нічого про Успення Богоматері.
Святий Епіфаній Кипрський († 403) пише: "Хай
досліджують святе Письмо та не знайдуть там свідчення
ані про смерть Марії, ані про те, що вона вмерла чи не
вмерла; ані про те, що вона похована чи не похована. І коли
Йоан перейшов до Азії, то також ніде не говориться, чи він
узяв із собою святу Діву".
Лише після IV сторіччя починають церковні
письменники на основі передання писати про останні
хвилини життя Пресвятої Богородиці. На Заході пише про
це святий Григорій з Тур († 594), а на Сході —
єрусалимський патріярх Модест († 634), від нього першого
маємо проповідь про Успення, святий Андрій Критський (†
712) та святий Йоан Дамаскин († 749). Два останні святі
Отці залишили по три проповіді про Успення.
У кінці VII і початку VIII ст. церковні письменники
починають звертати увагу не тільки на її чудесне Успення,
але і на її вознесення на небо з тілом та душею. Найбільш
цікавий речовий доказ про Успення подає святий Йоан
Дамаскин. У своїй другій проповіді на Успення,
покликаючись на незнану для нас Історію Євтимія, каже,
що Пульхерія, жінка цісаря Маркіяна (450-457), збудувала
церкву на честь Пресвятої Богоматері у Влахерні,
передмісті Царгорода й хотіла там покласти тіло Пресвятої
Богородиці. У зв'язку з цим вона звернулася до
єрусалимського патріярха Ювіналія († 458), який тоді якраз
був на Халкедонському Соборі (451). Той розповів їй
передання про те, що після того, як відкрили гріб для
апостола Томи, то не знайшли тіла Божої Матері. Замість
тіла, патріярх прислав Пульхерії похоронну ризу Пресвятої
Богородиці. Останнім автором на Сході, який зібрав усе
про Успення, є візантійський церковний письменник
Никифор Каліст Ксантопул († 1335). Він написав також
синаксарі для Тріоді і святих на цілий рік.
Святий Йоан Дамаскин вірить у те, що Пресвяту
Богородицю з тілом і душею узяли на небо. В одній із своїх
проповідей на її Успення він каже: "Годилося, щоб Той,
Хто зберіг її Дівицтво при своїм Різдві, зберіг і її тіло
нетлінним після смерти. Годилося, щоб та, що в своїх
обіймах носила Творця як Дитя, перебувала в небесних
хоромах. Годилося, щоб та, що бачила свого Сина на хресті
і якої серце прошив тоді меч болів, що їх вона не зазнала
при Різдві, гляділа на Нього, як Він сидить з Отцем.
Годилося, щоб Божа Мати посідала те, що належить до її
Сина та щоб усе створіння почитало її як Матір і як
Слугиню Бога".
У нашій богослужбі на Успення відбивається уся
традиція і віра Церкви перших століть у її чудесне Успення
і внебовзяття з тілом і душею. "У молитвах невсипущу
Богородицю і в заступництвах незамінне уповання гріб і
умертвіння не втримали. *Бо як Матір Життя до життя
переставив Той, хто вселився в утробу приснодівственну".
Свята Церква святкує Успення Богоматері, бо в небі
вона за нас заступається. "У різдві дівство зберегла Ти, в
успенні світа не оставила Ти, Богородице. Переставилася
ти до життя, бувши Матір'ю Життя. І молитвами Твоїми
ізбавляєш від смерти душі наші". У першій стихирі на
вечірні Церква закликає: "О дивне чудо! Істочник Життя
кладеться у гробі, і гріб стає драбиною до неба. Веселися
Гетсиманіє, святий Богородичний доме! Закличмо вірні,
маючи приклад архангела Гавриїла: Благодатна, радуйся! З
Тобою Господь, подавай світові Тобою велику милість".
 The Wonderful Dormition of the
Most Holy Mother of God
Celebrated August 15
The day of the death of the Most Holy Mother of God is
called the Dormition (or falling asleep) in our Church, for her
body did not know corruption after death, but together with her
soul was taken up into heaven; hence, another name for the
Feast is “the Assumption”. We have no historical data to
indicate how long the Mother of God remained on earth after
the ascension of Christ into heaven, nor when, where, or how
she died, for the Gospels say nothing of this. The foundation for
the feast of the Dormition is to be found in a sacred tradition of
the Church dating from apostolic times, apocryphal writings,
the constant faith of the People of God, and the unanimous
opinion of the holy Fathers and Doctors of the Church of the
first thousand years of Christianity.
The earliest written tradition which speaks of the death of
the Most Holy Mother of God is given in the work, which, in
the Western Church, is known by the title “The Transition (i.e.,
death) of St. Mary”; in the East that same work has the title
“Sermon of St. John the Theologian on the Dormition of the
Mother of God”. The author of this work is unknown. Some
historians believe that this work dates from the end of the
second or third century, while others place it at the end of the
sixth century.
From this work, which we summarize here, we learn the
details of the holy and wonderful Dormition of the Most Holy
Mother of God:
Three days before the death of Mary, the Archangel Gabriel
appeared and announced to her from her Son, Jesus Christ, the
time of her departure into eternity. On the day of her death, in a
miraculous manner the Apostles gathered in Jerusalem,
although they had been scattered in various countries of the
then known world. St. Thomas was the only Apostle absent.
The Mother of God expressed her wish to be buried in
Gethsemane near her parents and her spouse, Joseph. Christ, in
person, came accompanied by Angels and Saints to escort His
Most Holy Mother to heaven. The Apostles, while singing holy
hymns, carried the body of Mary to the grave where they
remained keeping vigil for three days. On the third day, St.
Thomas came from afar and desired very much to view for the
last time the Most Pure Mother of God. When the grave was
opened, her body was not there, only the funeral clothes in
which the body had been wrapped. The Apostles then realized
that Mary had been taken up body and soul into heaven.
From the beginning of the sixth century, it was believed by
many that the tomb of the Most Holy Mother of God was to be
found in the Church of the Dormition in Gethsemane, while the
Church on Mt. Zion was regarded as the site of her Dormition.
However, to this day historians cannot prove anything certain
concerning the place of her death and burial. Some believe that
she died in Jerusalem, others claim that she died in Ephesus
where St. John was believed to have taken her. Even today a
house in Ephesus is pointed out as the one where the Mother of
God allegedly lived.
The liturgical cult of the Most Holy Mother of God began
with the Council of Ephesus (431), which defined the dogma of
her Divine Motherhood. In the works of the holy Fathers prior
to the fourth century, no mention is made about the Dormition
of the Mother of God. St. Epiphany of Cyprus (+403) writes:
“Let them examine the Scriptures and they will find no
evidence there either on the death of Mary, nor on whether she
died or not, nor whether she was buried or not buried. And
when John went to Asia, nowhere is it mentioned that he took
the Virgin with him.”
It was not until after the fourth century that, on the basis of
tradition, church writers began to write about the final moments
in the life of the Most Holy Mother of God. These include St.
Gregory of Tours (+594) in the West, and the Patriarch of
Jerusalem, Modest (+634), who was the first to have a sermon
on the Dormition, St. Andrew of Crete (+712), and St. John
Damascene (+749) in the East.
Toward the end of the seventh century, and at the beginning
of the eighth century, church writers began to direct their
attention not only to Mary’s wonderful Dormition, but also to
her ascension into heaven body and soul. The most interesting
and most substantial testimony on the Dormition is given by St.
John Damascene. In his second sermon on the Dormition, he
appeals to another work, not well known to us, “The History of
Euthemius” and says, that after Pulcheria, the wife of Emperor
Marcian (450-457), had built a church in honor of the Most
Holy Mother of God at Blachernae, a suburb of Constantinople,
she wanted to place the body of the Most Holy Mother of God
there. In this matter she turned to the Patriarch of Jerusalem
Juvenal (+458), who at the time was at the Council of
Chalcedon (451). He related to her the tradition that, after
Mary’s grave had been opened for St. Thomas, her body was
not found there. Instead of the body, Juvenal sent to Pulcheria
the funeral clothes of the Most Holy Mother of God. The last
writer in the East who collected all the traditions concerning the
Dormition was the Byzantine Church writer, Nicephor Callistus
Ksantopul (+1335). He also wrote the synaxaries for the
Triodion and of the Saints for the whole year.
St. John Damascene clearly believed in the assumption of
the Most Holy Mother of God body and soul into heaven. In
one of his sermons on the Dormition he says: “It was fitting that
He, who preserved Mary’s virginity after his birth, should also
preserve her body incorrupt after death. It is fitting that She,
who carried in her arms the Creator as a Child, dwell in the
heavenly mansions. It is fitting, that she, who beheld her Son on
the cross while her heart was pierced with a sword of grief she
did not know at the Nativity, should now look upon Him as He
sits with the Father. It is fitting the Mother of God possess all
that her Son possesses and that all creatures venerate her as the
Mother and maidservant of God.”
The whole tradition and faith of the Church of the first
centuries regarding Mary’s wonderful Dormition and
Assumption body and soul into the heaven is reflected in our
service for the feast of the Dormition. “Death and the tomb
could not holy you, O Mother of God,” says the Kontakion of
the feast, “who are our ever-vigilant intercessor in prayer and
our unfailing hope in pleading for us. For He Who dwelt in the
ever-Virgin womb transferred the Mother of Life to life.” In the
Litiya stichera we sing: “Come, O gathering of those who love
her feast, come and let us form a choir. Come, let us fill the
Church with hymns of praise at the falling asleep of the ark of
God. For today heaven has opened its bosom, as it received the
woman who gave birth to the One whom nothing can contain.
Today the earth, as it gives back to heaven the Source of Life, is
robed in blessing and majesty. The angels join the crowd of
Apostles and gaze in awe at her who bore the Cause of Life.”

прости нам провини наші, як і ми прощаємо
винуватцям нашим.” Отже, якщо просимо в Бога
прощення для себе, а самі не простили
ближньому, стягаємо на себе суворий Божий суд
і можемо бути покарані. Саме про це нагадує нам
Ісусова притча про боржників. Цар простив
своєму слузі великий борг, а цей не простив
своєму співслузі маленького боргу і за це був
страшно покараний.
Ми слабкі люди. У всіх можуть бути гріхи і
образи один на одного. Та що було б, якби люди
не прощали б взаїмно, а Господь не прощав нас?
Життя було б нестерпним. Тому прощаймо один
одному і Боже прощення і благодать зійде на нас.

Lord God forgives us our many sins and we have an
obligation to forgive people for their transgressions
against us. We ask in prayer: “Forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against
us.” If we ask God to forgive us and then don’t
forgive our neighbor, we call down God’s stern
judgment upon ourselves and we can be punished for
this. Jesus reminds us of this in the parable about the
debtors. The king forgave the great debt his servant
owed him. The servant, in turn, would not forgive
the small debt owed him by his fellow servant. When
the king discovered this, he severely punished the
servant.
We are weak people. We each have sins and
offenses against each other. What would happen if
people did not forgive each other and God did not
forgive us? Life would be intolerable. Let us forgive
each other, so that God’s forgiveness and blessings
will be bestowed on us.

Holy Church rejoices at the Dormition of the Mother of God,
for she intercedes for us in heaven. In the troparion of the Feast
we read: “O Mother of God, in giving birth to Christ you have
preserved your virginity, and after the assumption you did not
abandon the earth; you have passed from life, being the Mother
of Life; and through your prayers you deliver our souls from
death.” In the first stichera in the Vespers service the Church
exclaims: “O strange miracle! The Source of Life is laid in a
tomb, and the grave becomes a ladder to heaven. Rejoice
Gethsemane, holy chamber of the Mother of God! O faithful,
let us all cry out with Gabriel: O Full of Grace, rejoice! The
Lord is with you, and because of you he bestows great mercy
upon the world.”

Сповідь: Скористати з Тайни Сповіді можна кожної неділі в часі
Служби Божої.
Хрещення: Слід усталити дату з священиком не менш як за
місяць до запланованого дня хрестин. Батьки і хресні мають
виконати необхідне приготування, про яке довідаються в
священика.
Шлюб: Наречені мають вписатися в книгу на вінчання
заздалегідь, але не менш як за 6 місяців до церемонії. За шість
місяців наречені мають відбути підготовчі бесіди із священиком.
Принаймні один з наречених, або їх батьки мають бути
зареєстрованими практикуючими парафіянами катедри, щоби
вінчання могло відбутися саме в катедрі св. Миколая.
Перебування в лікарні: Якщо Ви, або хтось з Вашої родини, з
будь яких причин, є на лікуванні в лікарні й бажає щоб священик
його відвідав, просимо повідомити про це парафіяльну
канцелярію. Федеральний уряд законом про втримання таємниці
(privacy law) , не дозволяє лікарній адміністрації давати знати
парафії. Це є відповідальністю паціента або його родини.
"Нова Зоря" є єпархіальним місячником, що подає відомості про
всі єпархіальні новини, а також новини з України. Ви можете
сплатити річну передплату, що складає 20 доларів, у парафіяльній
канцелярії.

New Parishioner Registration: We welcome all new parishioners and
are thankful God has sent you to St. Nicholas Cathedral. Please
register by obtaining a registration form from the parish office or
emailing your request to:

Confessions are heard on Sundays during each Liturgy or by
appointment.
Baptisms should be arranged through a priest at least one month prior
to the date of baptism. Parents and sponsors must attend instruction
prior to the baptism of their child.
Marriage: Couples planning to marry are requested to make their
arrangements early, but no less than six (6) months in advance of the
proposed date. Pre-marital conferences must be arranged six (6)
months prior to the ceremony. At least one of the couple, or their
parents should be registered participating members of St. Nicholas
Cathedral for eligibility to be married in the cathedral.
Sick & Homebound: If you or a family member are confined to home
and are unable to attend Liturgy either temporarily or on a continuing
basis, and wish to receive communion, please notify the parish office.
Hospital Stay: If you or a family member are admitted to a hospital for
any reason and wish to have a priest come to visit, please notify the
parish office. Recent federal privacy laws do not allow hospitals to
notify the parish if you are admitted. It is the responsibility of the
patient or family to notify the parish office.
The New Star is our monthly eparchial newspaper and has information
from all our parishes as well as from Ukraine. The subscription cost is
only $20.00 per year and should be paid in the parish office.
