Changes to Grand Central Parkway Westbound at Exit 4 and


Brooklyn Queens Expressway Entrance at Astoria Blvd
On or about July 31st, NYSDOT will implement a pilot program meant to reduce congestion on the westbound
Grand Central Parkway (GCP).

Currently, Exit 4, a connection from the westbound GCP to the eastbound Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE),
becomes congested during peak hours as drivers use two lanes to merge onto the one-lane exit. This often
causes congestion for all westbound lanes of the GCP.

As part of this pilot, NYSDOT will reconfigure Exit 4 as two lanes. New signage leading to the exit will be
installed that identifies the rightmost lane as exit only, with the adjacent lane providing the option to exit or
to continue on the GCP.

To facilitate this change, drivers approaching the eastbound BQE from Astoria Boulevard will now be required
to stop and merge onto the BQE. The below graphic illustrates the pilot configuration:
