Planning, Preparation and instruction MMs. Ashley Schrader taught ina fith grade classroom at White Pines Intermediate School in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools District during her fourteen-week student teaching experience during the 2015 Winter term. Ashley assumed full planning and delivery of instruction for the primary content areas of social studies and language arts during the semester. She also had the opportunity to teach math and science lessons with the co-teaching partner of her cooperating teacher. Ashley also developed, planned, taught and developed assessments for a GVSU required unit. Her unit was in social studies ttled, The Declaration of Independence, Throughout her unit Ashley integrated additional content areas and developed her lessons around best teaching practices. She understands the need for, and adeptiy provides accommodations forall learners in her classroom. In addition she provided enrichment opportunities for students who were able to develop their proficiency on the standards she was teaching and assessing. Ashley understands the need for ongoing formative assessment and uses it to guide her instruction. Ashley was very cognizant of aligning her unit wth district ‘curiculum and state standards. Classroom Environment ‘Ashley has @ solid understanding of the developmental process and the fact that all students leam in their own way. She knows that for students to do their best they must have a safe environment in which to lear. She is very encouraging of all students and works very hard to help all students find success in the classroom. During her time in this placement she implemented an effective classroom ‘management system that led to all students taking part in the effective operation oftheir own classroom and their own learning. Ashley establishes a classroom of encouragement, support and yet also one of high expectations forall. Ashley does all ofthis with a warm disposition and sense of humor. She related well to her students and one could observe that her students were very comfortable and related well to her. Professional Respon Ashley is very open to insights on her teaching provided by both this observer and her cooperating teacher. Ashley sef-eflects on her teaching and was right on target when she would generate ideas for how she might improve her lessons inthe future. During her placement Ashiey had the opportunity to take pat in ith grade team meetings, bulking staff meetings and professional development opportunites at both the building and district level. She also led a significant number of Parent-Teacher conferences that took place cover several days during her placement. Again her Cooperating Teacher noted that Ashley handled these conferences with confidence ‘and maturity In addition to having a very successful student teaching placement during the Winter 2015 term, Ashiey also spent a semester abroad in Spain where she also had a teaching assisting experience. This demonstrates her desire to grow and leam both personally and professionally. That experience has also provided her an opportunity to now bring an expanded world perspective tothe classroom.
