Camera Project
The Language Experience Approach encourages reading and writing through personal
experiences and oral language. During this process a conversation takes place between a student
(learner) and an educator (teacher/transcriber). The student orally explains their interpretation or
account in regards to a picture, personal experience, or any other form of prompt. The transcriber will
take precise note of what the speaker is saying as the discussion goes on. The transcriber will not
make any grammatical corrections. The errors that are recorded will eventually serve as an example
This week we took photographs of specific locations in and around the school campus. These
photos include the playgrounds, the garden, the classroom library and a couple other area of interest.
I had the opportunity to show each picture to a small group of students in order to gather their
thoughts, opinions, and interpretations. Upon receiving their input, I jotted down the conversation so
that I could reference their quotes in the booklet I was putting together for the classroom. The benefit
of the booklet is to provide the students with an example of how their words are language and by
using them, we are able to create literature. Talking about the pictures, place, what we see and what
we do or think is the foundation of language and literacy. Projects or any works similar to the camera
project we did with our Pre-K for SA classes are a strong representation of the Language Experience
Approach.
