Estimability of Parametric Functions and One Way ANOVA

Q1. Consider the following linear model.

y1 = 1 + 2 + 1
y2 = 1 + 3 + 2
y3 = 1 + 2 + 3

Suppose that errors are uncorrelated with mean 0 and constant variance 2 .

1. Find BLUEs of 1 ,2 and 3 . Take y1 = 0.4, y2 = 0.7, y3 = 0.08.

2. Check whether each of the following parametric functions are estimable.

51 + 32 + 23
1 + 3
31 + 22 + 3

3. Determine the rank of estimation space and error space.

4. Express the coefficients of the each of the above parametric functions as linear combi-
mation of the rows of the design matrix if possible.

Q2. The tensile strength of portland cement is being studied. Four different mixing
techniques can be used economically. The following data have been collected.

Mixing Technique Tensile Strength

1 3129 3000 2865 2890
2 3200 3300 2975 3150
3 2800 2900 2985 3050
4 2600 2700 2600 2765

Table 1: Tensile Strength of Cement

1. Test the hypothesis that the mixing techniques affect the strength of the cement.

2. Use Fisher LSD method to make comparisons between pairs of means.

3. Use Tukeys test to make comparisons between pairs of means.

4. Check whether , 1 + 2 , 22 34 + 23 , + 2 are estimable.
