Russell's Lydian Chromatic of Tonal Organization far Improvisation (Concept Publishing Co) = warupordtiation is due BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES DAVID NATHANIEL BAKER—author, composer, arranger, instrumentalist, and teacher-is a gifted and versatile musician equally at home in all worlds of music. Born December 21, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana, Baker first established his musical reputation as a brilliant jazz trombonist. Hé:worked with the big bands of Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Johnson, Lionel Hampton, and Quiney Joies and with combos led by Wes Montgomery, Harold Land, Charles Tyler, and most notably, George Russell, Currently, Baker performs.onvcello, Baker holds the B.M.E. and M.M.E, degrees. from. Indiana” University, He studied trombone with Thomas ~ Beversdorf, William.Adam, J. J..Johnson,, Bob Brookmeyer, and others; cello with Leopold Teraspulsky, Jules Eskin, Norma Woodbury, Helga Winold, Janos Starker, and others; and theory and composition with George Russell, William Russo, John Lewis, Gunther Schuller, Bernard Heiden, and others. Baker received'a down beat Hall of Fame Scholarship Award in 1959 and won down beat's New Star Award: ‘Trombone in the'1962 Interniational Jazz’Crities Poll. In 1981 he was the recipient of the National Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame Award, In the non-jazz realm Baker has been a member of the Indiana University Philharmonic and Opera orchestras and the Wind and Brass Ensemble; the Builer University Orchestra, Band, and Brass Ensemble; and the Indianapolis Civic Orchesira: He has made solo appearances with and has had his compositions performed by the New York Philharmonic, among many orchestras.
