Intensity towards Female Students who lived in Hostel of Universitas Batam Year 2015. Faculty

Background: Untreated pain during menstruation can caused discomfort that it interferes with
daily activities. More than 50% of women of any country experiencing menstrual pain, in the
United States about 60% and about 72% in Sweden. While in Indonesia the incidence of
menstrual pain ranges from 45-95% among women of childbearing age. One of ways in tackling
the menstrual pain is by giving a warm compress to relax muscle tension and provide a sense of
comfort that the pain will reduced and even relieved. The purpose of this study was to determine
the effect of warm compresses in decreasing menstrual pain intensity.

Methods: This method of research is pre-experiment, with one group pretest-posttest design. The
amount of population and sample in this research are 70 respondents of female students who
lived in Hostel of Universitas Batam Year 2015 with experiencing a menstrual pain. The
sampling method is total sampling. The results were analyzed with the distribution of the mean
or average then tested by the Wilcoxon signed rank test.

Results: Most of the respondents before it was given a warm compress feel pain in scale 4 with
an average of 4.87 and after being given a warm compress most of the respondents feel the
reducing of the pain with scale 2 with average of 2.37. Based on the analysis using Wilcoxon test
showed that the p-value of 0.000 ( <0.05), which means that warm compresses significantly
decreasing the intensity of menstrual pain.

Conclusion: Based on this study it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of giving a
warm compress to decrease the intensity of menstrual pain.
