STUDENT BIOGRAPHY:
My education at Fort Lewis College, along with my field study practicum, has prepared me to be a
student teacher. It has given me a better understanding of what being a teacher means and the demands
that come with caring for your students. It has given me a solid background to utilize state teaching
standards and apply them to create meaningful lessons that are fun and promote the students critical
thinking skills.
These experiences have made my discourse a professional one and they have challenged me in ways to
improve my creativity and attention to detail. They have prepared me to expect the unexpected. In
addition to my training with Fort Lewis College, I have been prepared for the demands of teaching by
my own children. Being a mom has made me more patient and understanding of childrens needs,
directing my managing skills towards reaching a good balance between the students needs and my
own.

BASED ON FIELD PRACTICE AND OTHER TEACHING EXPERIENCE, WHAT

DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR STRONGEST TEACHING AREAS?
TEACHING
One of my strongest teaching areas is high expectations for both
STRENGTHS my students and myself. In addition to this, I often use hands-on
activities for a student- centered learning environment, I am well
organized, and I offer frequent feedback.

The lessons I have developed so far are aimed to get students into
contact with the material that is to be learned, such as bug building
labs where students create an organism from a set of given genetic
information. As I expect that my students learn the science
academic content, I also expect that they write without spelling or
grammar errors, and as I circulate in my field study classrooms, I
often point out these mistakes and direct students to correct them.

Another example of student centered learning environment is the

use of demos, such as lunar phases. This way students will see it for
themselves and have a better chance at learning the content.

BASED ON FIELD PRACTICE AND OTHER TEACHING EXPERIENCE, WHERE

TEACHING DO YOU THINK YOUR LARGEST AREAS OF PROFESSIONAL GROWTH LIE?

GROWTH The areas that I would like to improve as a teacher and show true
growth are questioning, with an increasing number of insightful
questions that can deepen student understanding and make them
go beyond the subject. This would follow with the inclusion in my
lessons of focused and interesting discussions. One of the most
important areas of growth is classroom management.

As I was teaching a lesson about the moon phases, I had a set of

questions I wanted to ask the students, but I didnt know how to fit
them well throughout my instruction and demo. It was my
cooperating teacher who gave me signals (often verbally) to ask
those questions.

And finally, as students are working on an activity they often stray

away from their task, and most of them need multiple reminders to
stay on task. I often dont know when these remainders are too
many and I need to move on to the next step for students who dont
want to work. doesnt want to work.
