Plate

Tectonics Lab 2/5

Student Teacher: Erin Tafoya School: Eppler Junior High

Curriculum Area: Dynamic Earth (Plate Tectonics) Grade Level: 8th

Anticipatory Set:
As students enter the room, they will complete their bell ringer for the day.
After we have discussed the bell ringer, we will review the different types of plate
movement using the hand gestures we assigned each type.

Objectives(s)/Purpose:
Students will review use grahm crackers, frosting, and water to recreate
vocabulary and processes of plate movement on earths crust. While working
together to complete the lab, they will reflect on what type of features are created or
if crust is destroyed in the process.
Checking for Understanding:
I will walk around the room during the lab to ensure student understanding.
Also I will collect their lab sheets and the end of the hour to determine student
understanding.
Guided Practice/Independent Practice:
After we review each type of plate boundary, I will introduce to students
their supplies and their lab sheets. Groups will be assigned and expectations will be
stated (do not eat the materials until permission is granted). As a class we will
illustrate the fist plate movement together. Students will brainstorm with their
group which type of plate movement is illustrated along with the different features
of earths crust that result from this particular plate movement. Groups will share
out their results, and then students will use their materials to complete the rest of
the lab and illustrate the other types of plate boundaries.
Assessment:
Students will turn in their copy of the lab sheet and answer the post lab
questions. Students will use the lab to determine how crust is created and
destroyed during these processes.

Closure:
We will use the last five minutes of class to clean up the lab. I will remind
students of their Unit Test next week Wednesday, and clarify any last questions they
may have for the post lab.
