Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the question below.
We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their
knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It does
not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright
and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of
their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their
academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching
contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classroom, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the opportunity to
learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with the personal
problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, to communicate
effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teachers.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes the work on individual tasks and assignments, they can
do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage
our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this effectively. An advanced
pupil can do advanced works; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not
their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.
Question 32: In the passage, the authors attitude towards mixed-ability teaching is ________
A. questioning B. approving
C. objective D. critical
Question 33: The phrase held back in paragraph 1 means ______
Question 34: The author argues that a teachers chief concern should be the development of the pupils
_________
A. Group work provides the pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers
C. Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with others
C. argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same class.
Question 37: According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
B. Pupils cannot develop in the best way if they are streamed into classes of different intellectual abilities
C. Its not good for a bright child to find out that he performs worst in a mixed-ability class
Question 38: According to the passage, which of the following is an advantage of mixed-ability teaching?
A. Formal class teaching is the important way to give pupils essential skills such as those to be used in the
library
Question 39: Which of the following statements can best summarize the main idea of the passage?
A. The aim of education is to find out how to teach the bright and not-so-bright pupils
A. is the act of putting pupils into class according to their academic abilities
C. is quite discouraging
Question 41: According to the author, mixed-ability teaching is more preferable because _______
A. children can learn to work with each other to solve personal problems
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions.
Long before they can actually speak, babies pay special attention to the speech they hear around them.
Within the first month of their lives, babies' responses to the sound of the human voice will be different from
their responses to other sorts of auditory stimuli. They will stop crying when they hear a person talking, but not
if they hear a bell or the sound of a rattle. At first, the sounds that an infant notices might be only those words
that receive the heaviest emphasis and that often occur at the ends of utterances. By the time they are six or
seven weeks old, babies can detect the difference between syllables pronounced with rising and falling
inflections. Very soon, these differences in adult stress and intonation can influence babies' emotional states and
behavior. Long before they develop actual language comprehension, babies can sense when an adult is playful
or angry, attempting to initiate or terminate new behavior, and so on, merely on the basis of cues such as the
rate, volume, and melody of adult speech.
Adults make it as easy as they can for babies to pick up a language by exaggerating such cues. One
researcher observed babies and their mothers in six diverse cultures and found that, in all six languages, the
mothers used simplified syntax, short utterances and nonsense sounds, and transformed certain sounds into baby
talk. Other investigators have noted that when mothers talk to babies who are only a few months old, they
exaggerate the pitch, loudness, and intensity of their words. They also exaggerate their facial expressions, hold
vowels longer, and emphasize certain words.
More significant for language development than their response to general intonation is observation that
tiny babies can make relatively fine distinctions between speech sounds. In other words, babies enter the world
with the ability to make precisely those perceptual discriminations that are necessary if they are to acquire aural
language.
Babies obviously derive pleasure from sound input, too: even as young as nine months they will listen to songs
or stories, although the words themselves are beyond their understanding. For babies, language is a sensory-
motor delight rather than the route to prosaic meaning that it often is for adults.
Question 52: Which of the following can be inferred about the findings described in paragraph 2?
A. Babies ignore facial expressions in comprehending aural language.
B. Mothers from different cultures speak to their babies in similar ways.
C. Babies who are exposed to more than one language can speak earlier than babies exposed to a single
language.
D. The mothers observed by the researchers were consciously teaching their babies to speak.
Question 53: According to the author, why do babies listen to songs and stories, even though they cannot
understand them?
A. They can remember them easily. B. They focus on the meaning of their parents' word.
C. They enjoy the sound. D. They understand the rhythm.
Question 54: The passage mentions all of the followings as the ways adults modify their speech when talking
to babies EXCEPT ______________.
A. speaking with shorter sentences B. giving all words equal emphasis
C. using meaningless sounds A. speaking more loudly than normal
Question 55: The word "diverse" is closest in meaning to ______________.

Question 56: The word "They" refers to ______________.

A. To contrast the reactions of babies to human and nonhuman sounds
B. To give examples of typical toys that babies do not like
C. To explain how babies distinguish between different nonhuman sounds
D. To give examples of sounds that will cause a baby to cry
Question 58: What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The differences between a baby's and an adult's ability to comprehend language
B. How babies perceive and respond to the human voice in their earliest stages of language development
C. The response of babies to sounds other than the human voice
D. How babies differentiate between the sound of the human voice and other sounds
Question 59: The word "emphasize" is closest in meaning to ______________.
A. stress B. leave out C. explain D. repeat
Question 60: What point does the author make to illustrate that babies are born with the ability to acquire
language?

B. Babies begin to understand words in songs.
C. Babies notice even minor differences between speech sounds.
D. Babies are more sensitive to sounds than are adults.

Family plays an important role throughout each ones life. Firstly, it is our families that are willing to support us
at any time. When we are small, our parents bring us up. They are ready to instruct us to walk, to ride, to self -
care and care for others. Our family finances not only our physical life but also our intellectual life from
education to leisure activities. We receive family members care in every meal, every time we are sick and
every time we stay together. Through ups and downs, our family is still available to share extreme feelings such
as happiness, worrisome, failures and tries to solve our problems. In another word, they promote our strength
without calculation. Secondly, family creates our developing environment. It gives us habits, ways of thinking
through which we shape our characteristics. The reacting and tolerating manner of other members affect us
toughly, resulting in our personalities. In sum, family is a source of encouragement and personality for us.
