Duncan-Chang Model

The calculation of subsidence plays an important part in underground engineering design. With
the deep-going research on land subsidence, it has been found that land subsidence is not only caused
by soils of high compressibility such as clay layer, but also the sand soil layer which can't be ignored.
And whether the results are reliable depends largely on the selection of computational model and its
parameters (Weixing Feng, Shaodong Chang, Wanyi Hu, 1999). Kondner (1963) suggested that, it is
feasible to find a hyperbolic to fit the relationship between the deviator stress and axial strain through
conventional tri-axial drained shear test. Besides, on this basis of incremental Hooke's law, Duncan
and Chang (1970) studied the soil's failure criterion of Mohr-Coulomb, and then they calculated the
formula of the soil's tangent modulus of elasticity. According to the suggestion of Kulhawy (1969),
hyperbolic is also feasible to fit the relationship between the lateral and axial strain, and then the
formula of the soil's tangent Poisson ratio can be calculated as well. In engineering practices,
Duncan-Chang model shows many advantages, such as simple formulas, well-defined parameters
determined by tri-axial test, so it is widely applied now.
