Piecing the Block:

Step 1. Referring to , sew Background 2 x 18 strip to Red 2 x 18 Sew Red 2 x 2 squares to each side of Background 2 x 3 1/2
strip. Cut 8 segments 2 wide. rectangle to make pieced strips (Diagram IIIB). Make 2.

Step 2. Stitch together 2 segments to make four-patch unit Referring to Diagram IIIC, sew Center Unit together. Make 1.
(Diagram IB). Make 4.

Step 3. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 Navy

square. Layer square and 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 Background rectangle.
Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4 from Step 4. Referring to Diagram IV, sew units together to make block.
