INTRAVENOUS THERAPY.

Intravenous therapy is define as the infusion of liquid substances directly into a vein.
Therapies administered intravenously are often included in the designation of specialty drugs.
Here in the Philippines, the RA 9173, otherwise known as the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002,
states that the administration of parenteral injection is included in the scope of the nursing
practice. The Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) believes
that the nurse ho practice IV therapy are only those registered nurses who have been adequately
trained and have completed the training requirements of the IV Therapy Program are Certified IV
Therapy Nurse.

The Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center-Nursing Service Office in cooperation with
ANSAP conducted a 2-day IV therapy update last August 13 to 14, 2016 flagging 3 major updates:
Fluids and Electrolyte Management in Elderly; Managing Complications in Intravenous Therapy;
and Intravenous Therapy on Blood Transfusion (BT).

The seminar was headed by no-other-than the Chief Nurse herself, Fe B. Cuaton, RN, MAN
and 3 other competent nurse supervisors of the above-mentioned institution. It was a series of
discussion geared to enhance the knowledge, attitude and current practices of the participants in
relations to Intravenous therapy.

In totality, the 2-day update was worth the time of the participants. We went home to
Baybay bringing new and interesting knowledge not just for ourselves but for the interest of our
VSU-BSN students.
