Predictive factors of mortality in pediatric patients with acute renal injury associated with sepsis

INTRODUCTION:

Acute kidney injuri (AKI) is a significant factor that contributes to the morbidity and mortality of
children and newborn admitted to intensive care units. The admisin of patients with aki to the
pediactric intensive care unit (PICU) ranges between 48% and 68%.

Design: Predictive factors of mortality in pediatric patients with acute renal injury associated
with sepsis

Population: Pediatric patients with AKI, hemolitic uremic sndrome or cncer, hipoxemia,
hypotension, and coagulopathy.

Variables: Data were obtained from a database of patients admitted to the PICU from january
1990 to december 1994. The study included children aged 1 to 132 months of age, of both
genders, admitted to the PICU with a diagnosis of sepsis and AKI.

Data management: This was a retrospective observational study of pediatric patients cohort
admitted to the PICU of FACULTADE DE MEDICINA OF BOTUCATU, UNESP UNIVERSIDADE
ESTADUAL PAULISTA, wich is a tertiary hospital.

Bioeticps criteria: The study was approved by the local Ethics committe

Results: The study included 77 children with sepsis and AKI. Diarrhea and/or pneumonia were
the most common causes of sepsis 84%

Conclusion: An association between sepsis and AKI was observed in 71.03% of the patients
admitted to the PICU; this patient had a high mortality rate (33.7%), similar to that described in
other studies.
