Dear Parents,

My name is Ryan Campbell (Mr. C), and I will be starting my 4th year at Punta Cana International

School (PCIS). I will be your childs mathematics teacher. I have a post-grad credential in mathematics

from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California, and I have a Bachelor of Science in

Business Administration with a focus in Corporate Finance from the California State University in

Bakersfield, California. I have taught in previous years Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics,

and I look forward to teaching your child this year.

Mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships. Theoretical mathematics seeks out

patterns and relationships within mathematics itself. Applied mathematics seeks out patterns and

relationships with the objective world, and seeks ways to logically model the objective phenomenon. In

each of the courses this year, we will learn about both of these major areas of mathematics. My

instructional philosophy is to use many different methods. I will use direct instruction, induction,

concept attainment, and complex instruction. The students will learn as individuals and in small groups.

The students will receive homework each week, and the homework will be a combination of skill

development and critical thinking questions. The students will also complete a few projects during the

course of the year, as individuals and in groups. Some resources may need to be purchased for these

projects, and I really appreciate your cooperation and collaboration.

I hope that this school year will be the best year yet. I look forward to meeting each and every

parent, and I hope that together, we will help each and every student reach his or her potential.

Sincerely,

Ryan Campbell

Any student arriving after 7:50am will be marked tardy, unless a medical excuse is provided. A student
will be marked absent on any day that is missed, unless a medical excuse is provided.

All aspects of the uniform policy will be enforced vigorously. If uniform issues continue to be an issue
with a student, then more formal disciplinary measures will be taken (i.e. detention).

Materials and Books

All mathematics students will be required to have a scientific calculator, a school approved notebook, a
ruler, and a pencil or mechanical pencil. NO PENS. Students will not be allowed to share any of these
items. Textbooks will be provided, and they will remain in the classroom. Workbooks will be given to
the students to take home.

Agendas
Students will be provided with an agenda to keep track of their homework assignment for courses and
other important events.

Lunch/Recess
Students will be given 2 recesses and 1 lunch per day. Students will be given 5 minutes to get to their
next class after the bell rings to end recess or lunch. If they arrive at the next class after 5 minutes, then
they will be marked tardy. If they are tardy three times in period, then they will receive a detention.
Cell phones will be allowed to be used during recess or lunch. If a teacher notices a student using a cell
phone, then it be confiscated and given to Mrs. Cuello or Mr. Jenkins.

Jupitergrades
The parents and students will receive a Jupitergrades account where they will be able to access student
grades. They will be able to contact teachers through Jupitergrades, and teachers will be able to contact
parents. Furthermore, mathematics homework assignments will be emailed to parents and students
each Monday.
Grading
The grading scale for mathematics will follow the traditional plus/minus system (i.e. B+, B, B-). In order
for a student to receive a passing grade for a semester, then they will need to score a grade of C- or 70%
from the combination of the semester grade and the final exam grade.

Notebooks
Students will be required to use a different notebook for each class. In mathematics, students will
typically use 2-3 notebooks per year. NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS.

Technology Integration
There will be times during the school when a student will be required to bring a laptop or tablet to
school for classroom purposes. As far as mathematics, students will not be allowed to use their cell
phone for any classroom purposes.

Homework
Homework will be assigned on Monday, and they will be due on the last class period of the week for
each group. Homework will be a mix of skill development and critical thinking questions. If homework it
not turned in on the due date, then there will be up to a 20% deduction if is turned in at the next school
day, not the next time they have mathematics class. If it is not turned in by the next school day, then a
zero will be given for the assignment. Exceptions will be made for absences only.

Assessments
Students will be given daily formative assessment (checks for understanding). Students will also be given
projects, quizzes, and examinations. If a student has a professionally assessed learning disability, then
accommodation will be made. Any other accommodations will be made at the discretion of the teacher.

Projects
Some projects may require parents to purchase supplies, and we look forward to your collaboration and
we thank you.

Field Trips
It is likely that your child will attend at least one field trip this year. If there is a field trip, then a
permission form will be sent home at least a week before the date of the field trip.

Detentions and Referrals

The students handbook is clear about the rules and how a student earns a detention or a referral. I will
have a list of my classroom rules that I will go over with the students. A list of these rules will be sent
home to the parents, so that parents may look at the rules and consequences and sign-off on them. If
there are any questions about the rules, please feel free to contact me.

Extracurricular Activities
We have many extracurricular activities, which are held Monday to Thursday, both free and paid.
Parents will be notified through Jupitergrades on the types of activities available and the day they will be
held.

Parent Involvement
We appreciate greatly parental involvement in the school. One important way to be involved is to be a
parent delegate. My homeroom is 10B, and if you are a parent that would like to be our delegate, then
please contact me.
Contact Me
You can contact me through Jupitergrades, and I will reply within 24 hours. If it is something that cannot
wait 24 hours, then please feel free to call me at 829-437-9902. Please make sure to call me before
7pm.
