Every part, every assembly, is of first quality, thoroughly tested material, and the finished product represents the ideal combination of company resources and skilled workmanship. Although we believe this hoist to be the finest of its kind, the life and performance of the unit depends not only upon proper application within the range of its rated capacity, but also upon the attention it receives. ‘The operating and maintenance instructions which follow have been carefully prepared to provide a simple and understandable guide. Necessary instructions for the ordering of replacement parts are also contained in this manual. The use of Genuine P&H Replacement Parts for your HEVI-LIFT Hoist will assure you long and satisfactory service, DRUM SHAFT eae i Figure 1. P&H HEVI-LIFT HOIST INSTALLATION A wide variety of mounting installations are common to the holst. Some of the common types of mounting are illustrated in Figure 2. ‘Tho reeving on the hoist varies with the application. Before starting the reeving process, lay out the wire rope so there is no possibility of kinking. Refer to Figure 3 for details on the various parts of lines and proper layout. ‘The P&H Hevi-Lift Holst is tested under load and adjusted for proper operation before leaving the fac~ tory. Before the unit is placed in service, there are several items that must be checked to insure correct application and avoid serious trouble. 1. Check the power supply which is indicated on the hoist serial number plate. If the power supply is di- rect current, check the voltage; if alternating cur- rent, check the voltage, frequency and phase. The voltage supplied to the hoist must be the same as in- dicated on the hoist serial number plate or overheat ing of the motor will reduce the lifting capacity and cause improper function of all electrical parts. 2. Refer to the Lubrication Section to determine if the hoist is properly lubricated. 3. The direction of rotation of alternating current motors is impossible to pre-determine.. ‘The load block must raise when the RAISE button is operated: ‘The mit switch will not operate if the load block rises when the LOWER button is pressed. If the oad block lowers when the RAISE button is operated, the direction of rotation must be changed in ac cordance with the instructions on the wiring diagram, 4. Connect the hoist to the correct source of power and test the operation of the limit awiteh. Start the unit in the hoisting direction and slowly Lift the limit switeh weight by hand. The hoisting cireuit should ‘open and the electric motor brake should set. The oad block should come to rest. Further lifting of the limit switch weight will temporarily close the lowering circuit and prevent any additional over- travel motion. As soon as the load block has lowered small amount, the limit switch breaks the lowering circuit and the’ load block stops, Even though the load block has traveled into the limit switeh and ‘opened the hoisting circuit, the lowering circuit 1s SULL intact. ‘Ihe load block may be lowered which automatically closes the hoisting circuit, 5. Test the operation of the direct acting magnetic brake to determine if the correct adjustment of the brake is obtained. When the power is cut off, the travel of the load block must also stop. If this con dition is not obtained, refer to Direct Acting Mag- netic Brake, Figure 4, for adjustment, ©. Attach a load within the capacity of the hu] Raise and lower the load a few feet to determing, the mechanical load brake is operating properly | holding the load. 4 When these items have been checked, the hois ready for service. Direct Acting Magnetic Brake ‘The direct acting magnetic brake must be properly adjusted to stop the rotation when the power supply 1s shut off. A periodic check is necessary to determine if the brake requires adjustment. When distance A, Figure 4, 1a exccoaive, the following adjuatment pro cedure is recommended: Remove the brake cover from the hoist assembly. Back off the lock nuts (1) and turn the adjusting nuts (2) until distance A is 1/18 inch. ‘The adjustment procedure is also described on the nameplate attached to the side of the brake and in the “Electrical Equipment” section. 1 Lock Nut 2 Adjusting Nut Figure 4. Magnetic Brake ‘Mechanical Load Brake ‘Tho mechanical load brake holds the load after holy, ing as well 2s controlling the load during loweri ‘The load brake requires adjustment only when re, placed as a complete unit. When a new load bray is purchased, install the assembly into the gear cay |“ 5 described in the "Hoist Assembly" section. Wire Rope Pass a rag over the wire rope occasionally to dete broken strands. The rag will snag on the broke strands. Ithere are a number of broken strands re place the wire rope. Use heavy of! or cable compound to keep the vite rope well lubricated. Motor Removal Open the main line switch and remove the plate eor- ering the terminal box on the side ofthe motor. Dis. connect the motor terminals. Loosen the cond! Jock nuts from the terminal box and pull the leats from the box. Remove the bolts securing the motor to the moter bracket. Pull the motor straight out from the unit ‘The rotor and stator will be removed as a unite. cause of the splined motor shaft. Remove the bear- ing retainer cover. The armature or rotor andex! bearing may now be removed from the assembly Motor Replacement Reverse the series of instructions given for remotal ‘The end bearing must have the proper type at amount of lubricant applied before assembly. Two types of five step variable speed control are used as standard for the hoist motion. The more popular is series reversing tap- ered armature shunt control and the other is plain, reversing. With tapered armature shunt control on the first three control steps a variable resistor 1s, connected across the motor armature in either direc~ tion of travel, to provide slow flat speed-load char- acteristics for these control steps. The last two control steps are plain series resistance steps. For the hoist having a motor-powered trolley drive two types of control are used, single speed reversing. and five step varlable speed plain reversing. Push Button Station A two-button push button station marked RAISE and LOWER iis used with hoists having a hoist motion only. A four-button push button station marked RAISE-LOWER, RIGHT-LEFT is used. with all two-motor hoists have motor-powered hoist and trolley motions. All push button stations have a Ground connection from the controller cabinet to the station, Three types of push button elements are used, de- ppending on the type of control. For single speed con= trol the push button element has both normally open and normally closed contacts (see Figure 6). Usu- ally only the normally open contact is used. This contact is closed by completely depressing the button. For two speed control a three contact element is used (see Figure 9). By partially depressing the Dutton, direction and slow speed will operate, and by completely depressing the button slow speed drops, ‘out and high speed will operate. For the five step variable speed control a five con tact push element is used (see Figure 10). Contact with the five speed points are made by progressively depressing the push button in increments of approx imately one-eighth inch, The wiring between the controller and push button, station is a plastic covered multi-conductor control cable. The push button station is suspended from the control cabinet by a chain, which removes the strain in the push button cable. Individual wires in the push button eable are color coded. . Wiring diagrams and color coding charts are packed with the hoist. 4 Rope Controlled Hoists Occasionally, on specific request, hoists are ty, nished with Single speed or five step variable apy rope-operated masters, Limit Switch A weight-operated limit switch as shown in Figyy 11 is used on standard hoists. A paddle type lint switch as shown in Figure 12 is used on low roa! hoists. Hither type limit switch when tripped wg open the holsting circuit, set the motor brake, stop the load block. If the load block drift exces the adjusted Mmit in case of incorrect brake adjug! ment or defective operation, © plugging circuit wi automatically close and plug the motor in the lover ing direction. ‘This prevents the load block fru, jamming into the hoist drum or frame. Limit swity cam adjustments for plugging vary for the hoist {rane sizes. Figure 11. Weight Operated Limit switch Geared Limit switches are furnished on special oF Ger (see Figure 7). Adjustment instructions art furnished with the switch. These switches are us!" ally furnished when the travel distance must be lin ited in both the hoisting and lowering directions All Limit switches are so arranged that only the di Fection of travel is interrupted and are automatically reset by operating in the opposite direction of travel BOOT ye ee Exce’ uri) Hoor lower Motor Brakes ‘The motor brake is spring set, electric release, pot type, multi-disk brake as shown in Figure 4. ‘The same basic brake is used for both A.C. and D. hoists. All coils are D.C., either series or shunt wound; A.C. hoists have shunt wound rectifier oper- ated coils. All brake coils are wound with Class B insulation and encapsulated in the brake pot with Epoxy insulation material. Brake adjustment pro- cedure is described on the name plate attached to the brake pot. For proper operation the brake should be adjusted ta, maintain distance "A" around the entire oiroumfor fence as close as possible to 1/16 inch, The adjust ment is made by backing off lock nuts (I, Figure 4) and taking up adjustment nuts (2) and retightening lock muts (1), Motors All P&H motors are built specifically for rugged hoist service. They are designed for rapid acceler- ation and frequent reversals. The motors are totally enclosed, with Class A insulation, rated 30 minutes 55°C. rise. Squirrel cage and wound rotor motors for 220. and 440 volt operation are reconnectable. ‘Two-speed motors and other voltages are not recon~ nectable : TROUBLE SHOOTING CHECK LIST TROUBLE CAUSE HOW TO REPAIR ) Excessive hoist cable | Lack of lubrication. Square, solid seating prevents twisting fF sliding motion ond extends contec! life. These contacts never need cleaning, filing, or dressing. They ore always in good operating condition and remain so without main- tenance of ony kind. When the contoct block Front cover is removed, the contacts are plainly visible from the front ff the contactor for easy contoct inspection, To remove front ond rear stotionary contects the contact block must be deteched from the contactor. To remove movable contacls the movable contact support must also bbe removed. Depress movable contoc! spring slightly, ond the movable contacts con be lifted from the molded sup- port bar. New contacts con be slipped in place easily, Contacts can be purchased either separately or os o com: plete set. See listing on Page 3. Operating Coil ee « Unique high-pressure molding results in coll thoroughly protected against mechanical damage and the corrosive effects of atmospheric conditions. Coil will not swell when subjected to over-voltage. Very litle trouble can be ex: pected from the operating coils. If the controller should fail to function, check voltage ccross coll terminals, Replacement of the coil is a simple operation that is eosily performed from the front. Squore, solid eecting prevents twisting or sliding motion end extends contoct life, These contacts never need clecning, filing, or dressing. They are always in ‘g00d operating condition and remain +0 without meinte nance of any kind. When the contact block front cover Is removed, the contocts are plainly visible from the front of the contactor for easy contact inspection. To remove front and rear stotionary contacts the contact block must be detached from the contactor. To remove movable contacts the movable contact support must also be removed. Depress movable contact spring slightly, ond the movable contacts can be lifted from the molded sup- port bar. New contacts can be slipped in place easily. Contacts can be purchased either separately or os @ com plete set. See listing on Page 3. Operating Coil « « « Unique high-pressure molding results in a col thoroughly protected ageins! mechanical damage ond the corrosive effects of atmospheric conditions. Coil will not swell when subjected to over-valtoge. Very litle trouble can be ex- pected from the operating coils. Ifthe contreller should fail to function, check voltage across coil terminal. Replacement of the coil is © simple operation that is ‘easily performed from the front. After loosening coll leads ‘ond four captive screws holding down the coil cover, the ceil cover along with the operating coil and the magnet yoke 0 unit ore lifted out from the front. When replac: ing the coil cover in the switch unit (see illustration below), be sure the operating lever of the auxiliory contact rests fon top of the movable contact support. Assembly of Operating Coil eee To replace the operating coil, first insert the magnet yoke in- to the operating coll as shown, After this hes been done, in- sert both the operating coil fond the magnet yoke as o unit into the coll cover secure ly. When replacing the coil cover into the switch unit, be sure the operating lever of the cuxiliery contact rests on top of the movable contact support Stationary Contact Block © ¢ © The hot molded contact block hos unusval strength ond dimensional accuracy. New material resists ote tracking tnd is unaffected by ore blast. Another feature of the sto tionary contact block is the one piece stationary contact: which permits rapid hect dissipation To detach contact block frst remove contact block cover which is held in by two captive screws. Then loosen two screws which hold contact block to the base assembly, the contact block con then be detached. The stationary contect block con be sold either complete with stationary ‘contacts or less the stationary contacts However, if extra stationary contacts are needed, they cor be purchased separately. Part numbers for contacts are listed on Page 3. Movable Contact Support © ¢ The molded contact suppert is in one plece, tt is not en assembly and consequently contains no ‘parts that cen shake loose or get out of alignment. The molded movable contact support carries the double breck contacts of weld- int codmium oxide silver. To remove movable contact support first detach contact block cover which is held in by two captive screws, then loosen four captive screws holding down the coll cover tnd lift out.
