Researchers at The University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne

wish to interview young adults with disabilities aged 19-29 about

discrimination (poor or unfair treatment) and disability in public places.

Whats it about? Compared to people without disabilities, people with

disabilities have an increased risk of being treated poorly or unfairly by
other people. Yet we know little about what this unfair treatment looks like,
how often it happen to young adults with disabilities, and particularly about
how this happens in public places (including on public transport, in streets,
and other public places outside your home). Based on the stories of young
adults with disabilities, this research project seeks to produce new
knowledge about when and how and where discrimination happens to
young adults with disabilities in public places. This knowledge will be made
available to policy-makers to help develop policies and programs that will
aim to prevent discriminatory acts occurring in the future.

Whats involved? Taking part in this project involves a first interview of

around 1 hour where we get to know you and ask about your family, who
you hang out with, everyday life, what you do in your spare time, your
disability, and your future plans. At a later date, we will ask you if you would
like to participate in a second interview (again of around 1 hour) to learn
more about any discrimination you have experienced in public places.
Participants will receive a $30 Coles Myer Voucher for each interview. The
researcher can come to you, or we are happy to reimburse your travel
expenses to attend the interview(s).
