4. PLOT COMMANDS
command = 4 or 5 character plot command function (see list of available commands following)
ENDOC
The plot commands described below follow a general format. The Summary Table at the end of this section summarizes the command
format and required parameters for quick reference. Note that all commands are in free-format. However, the order must be maintained
for each command. Also note that when height and size are required for a command, if the height and size are greater than 1.0 in
magnitude, M122 assumes project units are intended. When project units are used, height and size are converted as:
If height or size is entered as 0.0 (on ARROW, CNTLB, LABEL, LEGND, NUMBR and SYMBL), it will be assigned the value of
PAR31 from the run file.
Code indicates whether the parameters are in plotter units (code=0) or project units (code=1).
ARAY1 code X1 Y1 NP
The ARAY1 command specifies one point (X1,Y1) in a string of points to be connected by a line. NP is the number of the current
point in this string of points. This command is used in conjunction with the DASHL, SHADE and FLINE command.
ARAY2 code X1 Y1 NP
The ARROW command plots a line from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2. An arrowhead can be plotted at both X1,Y1 and X2,Y2. Type is a two
digit code (ij) where:
Examples
If code < 0, then X1,Y1 is ignored and the current pen position is used instead. Size is the size of the arrowhead in either plotter units
or project units.
The BORDR command plots a rectangular border (or box) with the lower left corner at X1,Y1, and upper right corner at X2, Y2. The
border may be rotated counterclockwise around X1,Y1 if ang>0 or clockwise around X1,Y1 if ang<0. The ang default is 0.0. The
border may be filled using the current pen if fil is 1.0. The default is 0.0 which simply plots the border. A filled border can be
shaded using percent shading if fil > 1.
The CIRCL command plots a circle or an arc starting at location X1,Y1. The starting radius of the arc is rad1 and the arc moves from
ang1 (the angle at the beginning of the arc) to ang2 (the angle at the end of the arc). Ang1 and ang2 are measured in a counterclockwise
direction. Rad2 is the ending radius of the arc.
The CNTLB command plots a string of characters between points X1,Y1 and X2,Y2. The string will be centered if the length
between the two points is greater than the length required by the label (string). The entire string of characters will start at X1,Y1 and
plot beyond X2, Y2, if the string exceeds the length between the points. The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or
plotter units. The #char is the number of characters in the string, pen# is optional, but if used, the pen specified will be used only for
this command. A quotation mark or a slash (/) is the delimiter for the character string. A quotation mark will recognize leading
blanks in the character string while a slash will not.
CONTF filename
The CONTF command accesses and plots the commands from an M607V1 contour plot file.
Use in conjunction with the CONTF command. It must precede CONTF. The CONTL command labels contours and the specifications
are:
Use in conjunction with the CONTF command. It must precede CONTF. The CONTW command creates a contour plot window.
The COORD command is used for plotting a series of coordinates on X or Y. The coordinates begin at X1,Y1 and end at X2,Y2 with
an increment of delta. The height, angle, and significant digits to the right of the decimal are given by ht, ang, and ndec, respectively.
The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or plotter units. The beginning coordinate value is given by valu and the
increment by dval. Ang is measured counterclockwise from horizontal.
The DASHL command is used to plot a dashed line based upon points stored with an ARAY1 or ARAY2 command. If code=0 or 1,
DASHL uses ARAY1 data. If code=2, DASHL uses ARAY2 data.
Sixteen dash patterns (#pattern) are predefined (-7 to +8). You can also define your own patterns. Size is the length of a single dash
element in plotter units. A standard dash of one solid element followed by a blank element is produced when #pattern=0.
You can define your own patterns based on key characters. A maximum of 20 patterns (8 standard positive and 12 user patterns) may
be specified for a given run. You define a pattern at the start of the run file with the command
A size of -1.0 indicates the pattern is not to be plotted. (Pattern) is defined from the following symbols:
Character Meaning
- plot a solid element
& plot a blank element
+ plot a perpendicular bar at current position
* plot an X across line at current position
> plot an > across line at current position
< plot an < across line at current position
@ plot a circle with radius=0.5 * size
. plot a centered bullet
For example:
DATAF filename
The DATAF command accesses and plots the commands from a binary file (filename). The plotting commands in the file must be a
subset of plot functions described in this section. If the commands are from an ASCII file, use the USERF command instead.
The DHCOL command plots a drillhole (usually in section) that begins at X1,Y1 and ends at X2,Y2. The DH-IDENT (dhid) has
nchar characters and the character height is size. The default for size is ansize. If size<0, the DH-IDENT isnt plotted and if size>0,
the DH-IDENT is plotted. If IOP3=0 in the run file, then the DH-IDENT is plotted at the top of the drillhole. If IOP3=1, it is plotted
at the end of the hole. Thik is the thickness of the drillhole intervals to be plotted with DHINT (see below). Thik default is 0.1.
The DHCUT command plots a line perpendicular to a drillhole (thick is line length) at a cross-section intersection. Thick default =
5 * ansize.
DHINT is used to plot values for each drillhole interval. The beginning of the interval is at X1,Y1 and the end of the interval is at X2,Y2.
#char is the number of characters in value. Pen# is the pen to be used for plotting. Value is the item to be plotted as a label for the
interval. If there is not enough vertical space to plot the label, it will not be plotted. Label size is controlled by size in the DHCOL
command.
-1 = no box
0 = box on right side of DH line
1 = ticks on right side of DH line
2 = ticks on left & right side of DH line
3 = ticks on left side of DH line
4 = box on left & right side of DH line
5 = box on left side of DH line
The size of the shading pattern is controlled by PAR34 in the run file.
The DHLFT command functions the same as DHINT, except the label is put on the left side of the drillhole trace, not the right side.
The DIMEN command plots an annotated drafting dimension line. X and Y specify the start of the dimension line and dim is the
actual dimension to be plotted. Ang is the angle of the dimension line from the horizontal (measured counterclockwise). This
function will plot two arrowheads separated by two vertical bars, dim units apart.
The ELIPS command plots an ellipse or an elliptical arc starting at location X1,Y1 on the ellipse. The radii are RX and RY in the X
and Y directions, respectively. Angle is an optional rotation from the horizontal (measured counterclockwise). Thf and tho, respectively,
are the angles at the starting and ending points on the ellipse with respect to angle.
ENDOC
This is the last command in the M122 run file. It signifies the end of the plot commands.
The FACTR command factors the plot by a specified multiplier (mult). If mult >1.0, the plot will increase in size. If mult <1.0, the plot will
decrease in size.
FLINE code
The FLINE command is used to connect the series of points given by ARAY1 with a smooth solid line if code =0 or 1. The series of
points given by ARAY2 is connected if code =2.
The GRID command plots a regular, linear grid with the lower left corner at X1,Y1. The spacing between N-S grid lines is xinc while
the spacing between E-W grid lines is yinc. If yinc is not specified, it defaults to xinc for a square grid. Xoff is offset from X1 for
plotting grid. Yoff is offset from Y1 for plotting grid. Xoff and yoff default to zeros if not input. If xoff, yoff are input, yinc must be
defined (e.g., cannot be left blank.)
IDENT comments
The IDENT command is used to enter any comments, remarks or identifying lines. The comments do not affect the plot, but are used
to document the plot file.
The LABEL command plots a string of characters beginning at the location X,Y and proceeding at the angle (ang) from the horizontal
(measured counterclockwise) for a total plot length of (ht * #char). The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or
plotter units. If #char=0, the date will be plotted. If #char=-1, both the date and time will be plotted. The number of characters is limited
to 74. Pen# is optional. If used, the pen specified will be used only for this plot command. The starting location is the lower left hand
corner of the first character in the string. A slash (/) or quote mark is optionally used to delimit the character string. A quote mark will
recognize leading blanks in the character string while a slash will not.
The LEGND command plots a graphic map scale with alternating top and bottom increments filled in. The map scale begins at X,Y
and proceeds parallel to either the X-axis (ang =0) or the Y-axis (ang =90). The total length of the scale (len) may be entered in either
plotter units (code =0) or project coordinates (code =1). The length and labeling of the scale increments are controlled by delta:
Scale increment = delta / XSCALE (for a map scale in the X-direction) Scale increment = delta / YSCALE (for
a map in the Y-direction)
For example, if the map scale is 1" =50 and delta =50, each increment will be 1" long and labeled above the map scale starting with a 0,
then 50, 100, etc. The character height for these labels (size) may be entered in either project or plotter units. Ndec is the number of
decimal places and defaults to -1 (no decimal point).
The LINE command plots a solid or dashed line between points X1,Y1 and X2,Y2. If size is less than 0.05, a solid line will be plotted.
A dashed line will be plotted if size is greater than or equal to 0.05. The size of the dash pattern will be in plotter units if size is greater
than 1.0 and will be in project units if size is less than or equal to 1.0.
METAF filename
MOVE2
The NUMBR command plots a real number (value) at the specified map location (X,Y), at the given angle (ang) from the horizontal
(measured counterclockwise). The character height (ht) may be entered in either project or plotter units. The numeric value is plotted
with the number of decimal places specified by (ndec). Ndec=0 will plot the decimal point. Ndec = -1 will not plot it.
The NUORG command will set a new origin for a plot at the location xcon, ycon.
PEN# n
The PEN# command selects which plotter pen is to be used. N is the pen to be selected (1,2...). Once selected it will be used for all
commands following until specified otherwise.
The PLYFL command shades a polygon with pen as color. The polygon can also be outlined if edg = 1.0 (the current pen will be
used as the outline). The default for edg is 0.0, (no outline). To select a pen to shade the polygon using a Calcomp plotter simply refer
to your color chart and use the color number associated with the color of your choice. For Hewlett Packard plotters refer to the 120
-Technical Section on setting up a palette, then use the pen number of the palette selection you have set up. The code parameter of
PLYFL should be set to 1 or 2 based on which ARAY you are using. PLYFL with code 1 should be used with ARAY1 commands; use
code 2 to fill a polygon defined by ARAY2 commands.
For Hewlett Packard plotters, you can specify a shading level for the fill command by setting pct to a value from 1-100. One side-effect
of this is that the setting will stay in effect until it is reset. This will affect the BORDR command as well as PLYFL. To reset the shading
level, use PLYFL with a code of 0. For example, PLYFL 0 0 0 50 will reset the shading level to 50%. Using 100 for pct will reset the
shading level to solid fill.
To solid fill, set pct=100 and raster_type =0. A raster_type > 0 will override pct.
The POINT command moves the pen from its current location to a new point at (X,Y) with the pen down (ipen =2) or with the pen up
(ipen =3). Pen# is optional. If used, the pen# specified will also control any plot commands. If dash is specified, a dashed line will be
plotted that will connect points. Dash is the length of the dash pattern.
The POLYG command plots a polygon of equal length sides (slen) beginning at (X,Y). The starting point (X,Y) is the lower left vertex
of the polygon. Slen must be specified in plotter units. Ang is the angle of the base of the polygon from horizontal (measured
counterclockwise). The number of sides for the polygon is specified by #side. If side is negative, a star is drawn with sides points.
The RESET command can be used to reset the plot origin and the map parameters. If X1 + Y1 equals 0.0, the plot origin will be
moved to an X-coordinate of XMAX + 4 plotter units and a Y-coordinate of YMIN. If X1 + Y1 are greater than 0.0, the plot origin
will be shifted by X1,Y1. This command will also reset any SHIFT or NUORG commands. If XMIN, XMAX, YMIN, or YMAX are
0.0, XMIN, XMAX, YMIN, YMAX will not be reset.
The SHADE command is used to shade, or cross-hatch, the area defined by the closed, clockwise boundary created from the ARAY1
or ARAY2 commands. Two sets of cross-hatching can be used. The first set has a spacing of dist1 at angle ang1, and the second sets
spacing is dist2 at angle ang2. If code =1, ARAY1 is used. If code =2, ARAY2 is used. If dist<1.0, it is assumed to be in plotter units.
Ang must be between +90 and -90 degrees. Pen# defaults to the current pen#. If outline =1, the shaded area will be outlined.
This command is used to shift the coordinates of any following plot commands by a constant (xadd, yadd). If code =0, only plot
commands in plotter units will be shifted. If code =1, only plot commands in project units will be shifted. Plot commands can be
shifted with negative or positive values for xadd, yadd. When plotting a contour map produced from M607V1, you normally have
to shift the plot 0.5 blocks in the X,Y direction. You can shift with project units only if you specify a CONTW command. You would
normally shift with plotter units.
The SPECS command is used in the same manner as the MAP line in the run file. It specifies the minimum, maximum and scale
used. Its primary use is to overlay a map that has been generated with a different scale.
The SYMBL command is used to plot a single symbol at location X,Y with the angle (ang) from the horizontal (measured
counterclockwise). The height of the symbol may be entered in either project units (if ht>1.0) or plotter units (if ht<1.0). The symbol
(nsym) to be plotted can be obtained from the symbol charts that follow. If a symbol chart for your plotter is not included, use the
sample file included in the Sample File Section to plot your own chart. Pen# is optional. If specified, it is only used for this plot
command.
Note: The Hewlett Packard plotters use the first 13 symbols on this chart and are the only symbols available on the HP plotters.
SYMBOL CHART
The TICKS command plots tick marks on the left side of the line from X1,Y1 to X2,Y2 incremented by space. The length of the tick mark
is thik, and it may be entered as plotter units (if thik<1.0) or as project units (if thik>1.0).

9. If no plot is produced, check that you have specified correct filenames for any USERF, DATAF or CONTF commands.
10. If plotted information exceeds map boundaries, check the map parameters (especially XSCALE and YSCALE).
11. For many section routines, the X coordinate will be output in terms of displacement from the origin, not in true coordinates.
Specify an XMIN of 0.0 for sections that use displacement coordinates.

project units to plotter units and vice ve rsa. plotter units and vice versa. You must specify the file name
of the file to be converted and a filename for an output
file. You must also give coordina te conversion constants
(origin and scale) and you may optiona lly rotate the plot

SURVEY FILE
Survey files are specially formatted ASCII data files. The format is described below. Data that is not in this format can be converted
with a procedure in the MEDSManager Survey group.
The Fortran format for survey data is (A4, 2X, I6, 3F12.3). The columnar format of a survey file is:
Columns Description
1-4 Point code
5-6 Blank spaces
7-12 Point number
13-24 Easting coordinate
25-36 Northing coordinate
37-48 Elevation

any specific color or line thickness. It is recommended that some
thought be given to the representation of these items and that
the same standard be used throughout the life of the project.
Using the HP650C ink jet plotter, you can define a logical pen to
have a specific color and thickness. For MindSight the setup
must be done at the plotter. The plotter has a factory default
setting which cannot be changed and two (2) changeable settings,
Palette A and Palette B. Sixteen pens can be defined using
different widths and any combination of the plotters 256 colors.
The default line thickness is 0.35mm. The minimum thickness
is one pixel (0.13mm), and some colors are a dot pattern at this
thickness. We recommend that Pen 1--8 be primary or dark
colors, and Pens 9--16 be light colors, to be used for shading
polygons and blocks.
