‘TEE-OFF (TRANSFORMER CIRCUIT BREAKER) ‘The tee-off circuit breaker uses a rotating arc device as the means of interrupting both fault and load current, During an opening operation the are is initiated by the separation of plain break points, and the arc root at the fixed contact end rapidly transfers, under electromagnetic force, to a metal former within the interrupter col, binging the coil into the electrical circutt The electromagnetic field produced by the current in the coil once itis in circuit, is at right angles fo the arc column causing the arc to rotate at high speed under Fleming's Rule, within the coll former. The high speed rotation brings the arc into intimate contact with cool SFe gas which oxtracts energy from the arc column and leads to extinction at the first available current zero. An earthing switch for the tee-off outgoing circuit is provided, and can be operated after the main tee-off circuit breaker has been operated to the ‘OFF" position and the padiockable operational interlock has been moved to the appropriate position (see Section 5.4). 33 @) «) © PROTECTION ‘Tho standard protection is by Time Limit Fuse (TLF) - FIG 3.3 Time Limit Fuse protection is based on the distribution transformer protection described in E.S.141-6, Dual ratio transformers rated 100/50)5 are fitted as standard. Ratio selection is achieved by placing a solid connecting link between appropriately labalad terminals in the TLF Compartment within the outer cover. Two overcurrent release coils and one earth fault release coil are employed to trip the circuit breaker mechanism in the event of a fault. The overcurrent coils and EJF coll are connected parallel with the time limit fuse to provide time qraded protection characteristics. EF coll is not fuse protected (TLF protection is an optional requirement). For most applications time limit fuse complying wh requirements of E.S.1. 12-6: 1973 are recommended is shown in Fig. 9.3.1. The time limit fuses are located in a TLF compartment. ‘The earth fault release coil operates instantaneously (if TLF not ited) at 2 ‘minimum pickup current which depends on the current transformer ratio selected. ‘The minimum pickup currents are: C.T Ratio E/F Release Current 50/5 356A 100/5 5A, 15015 75A (8) The energising of an E/F or overcurrent coil actuates the trip bar and releases the mechanism.
