Problem Statement

The Margham Oil field in Dubai, UAE is producing oil utilizing solution gas drive. Initially
the reservoir pressure was at 1800 psia. The aggregate of the total oil produced was 5x106
STB. And the cumulative relevant oil to gas ratio was found to be 700 SCF/STB. The G&G
department using contouring curves were able to find out that the solution gas to oil ratio
changed from 380 initially to 230 SCF/STB. If the recovery factor is 0.28 then using this
data and the information given below, evaluate the original oil in place and the remaining
reserves for the reservoir.

Information Available:

P = 1800 psia
T = 160 F
Np = 5x106 STB
Bo = 1.2 bbls/STB
Rs = 230 SCF/STB
Rp = 700 SCF/STB
Rsi = 380 SCF/STB
Z = 0.81
Boi = 1.26 bbl/STB
Recovery factor = 0.28
Solution

First we compute the value of the current gas formation volume factor Bg using the
equation:

Bg = 0.005

0.81(160+460)
= 0.005
1800

= 1.395x10-3 bbl/SCF

Next, we find out the total fluid or oil withdrawal/production using the equation:
= [ + ( )] +
= 5106 [1.2 + (700 230) 1.395103 ] + 0
= 9278250

After this, the next step would be the calculate the oil expansion Eo using the equation:
= ( ) + ( )
= (1.2 1.26) + (380 230) 1.395103
= 0.14925

And Finally we can evaluate the initial oil in place using the equation:

=

9278250
=
0.14925
= 62165829.15 62.17

To calculate how much reserves are present we use the equation:

=
= 62.17 0.28
= 17.4

Since we have already produced 5MMSTb of oil the remaining reserves are:
= 17.4 5 = 12.4
