When bending load is applied to a slender structure the structure respond with bending deformation,

as shown in figure. This type of deformation results in flexural bending stress where the magnitude of
the normal stress varies linearly with the distance from the neutral surfaces. This structure is flexible
due to its geometrical properties. Notice that the material above the neutral surface in a state of
tension while the the material below is in compression
