CHAPTER 3: OPERATING THE ANALYSER

Preface:

This chapter gives routine and detailed operating instructions.

PrimacsMCS TOC Analyser Chapter 3 Operating 3-1

3 OPERATING
3.1 Standards and sample pretreatment
3.1.1 Preparation of standards
Introduction:
Only pure chemicals are to be used as standards for organic and inorganic
carbon. The chemicals require no further preparation, as they are pure.
Required Chemicals:
Calcium carbonate p.a., CaCO3 (Merck, cat. no 102066)
Oxalic acid, (COOH)2 .2H2O (Merck, cat. no. 100594)
Standards for the calibration curve of solid samples:
Only weigh different quantities of the standard for the calibration curve. The
amount depends on the required measuring range and the measuring
range of the IR detector (see chapter 6.1 for possible ranges). For TC
measurement Oxalic acid is advised and for IC measurement Calcium
carbonate.
3.1.2 Preparation of reaction solutions
Preparation of the 20% Phosphoric acid solution for the IC reactor
Dilute 235 ml 85% phosphoric acid to 1000 ml with carbon-free water and
mix.
3.1.3 Sampling and general pre-treatment
Solid samples:
Taking a sample one must pay attention that the sample is representative.
Therefore the sample must be completely homogeneous. Collection of the
sample should be done in a clean glass bottle and then treated according
to ISO 11464 and 11465. A representative sub-sample of the laboratory
sample has to be milled until it passes a 250 m aperture sieve. Standards
need no pretreatment and can be analyzed directly.
Use an analytical balance with accuracy of 0.1 (recommended) or 1 mg
(depending on the weight) to weigh the amount of sample directly into the
crucible (TC, cat.no 2CS22003) or into the test tube (IC, cat.no.
2CA50002). The sample in the crucible should be analyzed directly after
weighing.
For an IC analysis the sample must be wet with approx. 0.2 ml (5 10
drops) of carbon free water. The water has to wet all present sample in the
test tube before measurement for better acid/sample contact.
Sludge samples:
Taking a sample one must pay attention that the sample is homogeneous.
Mix before taking a sample. We advise to homogenize the samples by
means of an Ultra Turrax device or good alternative.
PrimacsMCS TOC Analyser Chapter 3 Operating 3-2

3.1.4 Quality Control

To make sure the obtained results are reliable one has to analyze quality
control samples daily. Prepare quality samples from standards as
mentioned at Preparation of standards at the top of this page.
Depending on the concentration of the test samples the following
tolerances are allowed:
1 to 10 mg C /g. 5%
>10 mg C /g. 3%
When the tolerances are not kept, also after several analyses, follow these
troubleshooting procedures to solve the problem:
Clean the analyser components that are in direct contact with the
sample.
Check the system on liquid and/or gas leakage.
Check the system on temperature accuracy.
To examine the oxidation degree one has to select a concentration of
quality control samples, which are in the concentration range of the
samples.
To report a correct TOC value if IC concentration is approx. < 5% of the TC
value, we advise to re-analyze the sample for IC in a more sensitive mode
and calculate the final TOC concentration offline.

Each analysis needs a calibration curve to calculate the results. The

software will check to see if there is more then one standard in the
template, if so it will perform a calibration according to the standards used.
All samples will then be calculated using this calibration curve. When the
program finds no standards or only one standard in the template the
software will check the list of default calibration curves in the Default
Calibration Curves window and use the most appropriate one. (If no curves
are available, add curves by the option Add Curve, see later in this
chapter). Curves can be added or removed from the list and selected or de-
selected. Make a selection of curves you wish to use (only selected curves
will be used). When you start the analysis the list of default (selected)
curves will be copied to the analysis file. Even during the analysis itself it is
possible to modify the list. The program will automatically select the most
appropriate curve. A curve to be used for calculating results must be of the
same type as the sample (TC, IC). Then the program will select the best
curve by looking at a number of parameters.
PrimacsMCS TOC Analyser Chapter 3 Operating 3-25

1. Range selection Low-High

2. It will take the curve(s)with the smallest maximum area in which the
sample fits (high priority).
3. It will take the curve with the best correlation (lower priority).
If the program cannot find such a curve, it will keep trying, dropping
parameters one by one (lowest priority first) until it finds a curve.
Here follows an explanation of the items in the headings.
Selected: A checkmark denotes that the curve is selected to be
possibly included in the calculation of the results. Click to
select or de-select.
Type: The type of analysis performed for calibration.

3.3.7 The Template menu

The template is used to set the performance of an
analysis. A template can be used for different analyses,
when the same sampling performance is required.
Templates can consist of only standards, only unknowns
or standards, QCs and unknowns. Each analysis needs
a template to set the sampling volume and the other
sampling settings as sampling time, integration time, the
Figure 3.35
number of samples and the number of extra samples.
The template can be edited during the analysis as long as the analyser has
not yet reached the position that is edited. The Template menu displays
the following options: New and Edit.
3.3.7.1 New
Select New and the following dialog box (see Figure 3.36) is displayed:
