Intro to ELL

8/30/17

1. In our mini lesson I think our biggest obstacle was that we had a very specific lesson so those
who did not understand what we were saying had trouble following along. Though we were
demonstrating and had a visual on the screen, this was a lesson that needed very specific
language.
2. To help overcome this challenge, I said mirame a lot which meant watch me. Every time I said
this I would demonstrate in an exaggerated way which helped a lot of the students who did not
understand and started working on their own. I called them back to my lesson and repeated
steps so then they were able to understand.
3. And 4. It was very demonstrative in how an ELL student may struggle. A majority of the class has
taken or is familiar with Spanish but there is still a lot missing and those missing pieces are very
important in day to day teaching.

5. This activity showed the need for the class itself. By giving us the opportunity to become the
language learning students ourselves, we saw the way it can negatively affect understanding in a
lesson. To combat this we need to learn the strategies and psychology behind learning languages.
This way we can be effective teachers to all students.
