1 Function and Area of Use

This document describes how to download an ADP6 project to an PWS-series
operator panel via a serial connection, Ethernet or USB.

2 About this Start Up Document

This Start Up document should not be considered as a complete manual. It is an aid to
be able to start up a normal application quickly and easily. For further information we
refer to the manual for the operator panels. This document and other Start Up
documents can be downloaded from www.hitechelectronics.com.au

3 Project Download via Serial Connection

Connect the RS232 port on the PC to the COM1 port on the PWS-panel using a PWS-CAB5
cable, or to the COM2 port using a PWS-CAB6 cable.
The connection can also be made according to the illustration below, where the left-
hand illustration applies to COM1, and the right-hand one to COM2:
9-pin male 9-pin female 25-pin male 9-pin female
RXD 2 2 RD TXD 2 2 RD
TXD 3 3 SD RXD 3 3 SD
GND 5 5 SG GND 7 5 SG
RTS 7 1 CD RTS 4 1 CD
CTS 8 4 DTR CTS 5 4 DTR
6 DSR 6 DSR
7 RTS 7 RTS
8 CTS 8 CTS

Perform the following steps:

1. Set dip switch SW5 = OFF and SW7 = ON. After the self test the system menu will
be displayed on the screen.
2. Press F2/Confg on the panel. A configuration menu will be displayed on the screen.
3. Change the Download/Upload/Copy port to COM1 or COM2 (depending on

3.1 Settings in ADP6
Regardless if COM1 or COM2 is used, the same settings are to be made in
ADP6.
Start ADP6 and open the application file to be downloaded. Make sure that the
communication parameters are correctly configured. Always make sure that the appli-
cation is compiled. The application has to be compiled every time a change has been
made before downloading it.
Continue with the following steps:
4. Select Application/Compile.
5. Select Options/Transmission setup.
6. Select which port and baud rate to be used. A baud rate up to 115 200 bit/s can be
selected. Click OK.

7. Select Application/Download Application and Firmware.

The panel will now receive the project from ADP6.

4 Project Download via Ethernet
The most efficient way to download a project to the PWS-series operator panel is to use
the Ethernet card (if the panel type is Network). The operator panel can easily be pro-
grammed via Ethernet, by following the steps below.

4.1 Connection to the Ethernet Port

To program the operator panel via Ethernet, an Ethernet connection is needed in the
PC. The connection can be made either using a hub or switch and a regular twisted pair
cable, or using a crossover twisted pair cable.
If the PC is not equipped with a network interface card, or the card in the PC is con-
figured to be connected to an office network, CAB35 can be connected instead.
CAB35 is an USB to Ethernet adapter and appears as an extra network interface card
in the PC when connected.

4.2 Settings in the Operator Panel

1. Set dip switch SW5 = OFF and SW7 = ON. After the self test the system menu will
be displayed on the screen.
2. Press F2/Confg. A configuration menu will be displayed on the screen.
3. Change the Download/Upload/Copy port to Ethernet.
4. Press PgDn or PgUp until the IP-address, Gateway address and Sub-network mask
appears on the display.
5. Use the + and - buttons to enter the desired IP-address. In this example the follow-
ing settings are made:
Parameter Setting

IP address 192.168.1.1

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

The first three groups of the numbers in the IP-address (192.168.1) is the network
address, and the last group (1) is the address of the operator panel.
6. Click on Save & Quit. The panel is now prepared to receive an application from
ADP6.

4.3 Settings in the PC
7. For the PC to be able to communicate with the operator panel it needs to use the
same network address as the operator panel, and an unique address. In this Win-
dows XP example the following settings are made:
Parameter Setting

IP address 192.168.1.10
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

8. Select Start/Control Panel/Network Connections.

9. Right-click on the network interface card and select Properties.

Connect the USB-device port on the PWS-series panel to a USB-host port on the PC. The
cable is a standard USB-Device to USB-Host-cable (the same type of cable is used
when connecting e.g. a printer to a PC).
