Conveniently use rotated axes to problems(be careful

with angles)
If not stated, do not assume that motion is impending
Two Types of Particle Friction
Problems
1. No apparent impending
motion: equilibrium
problem with the direction
of friction force F initially
assumed; do not apply
F=N at contact points
2. Impending motion:
direction of F is against the
direction of the impending
motion; F=N at contact
points
PROBLEM
PROBLEM

For each surface of contact, there is

a unique friction force (parallel to
the surface) and a unique normal
force (perpendicular to the surface,
pointing towards the body)

The normal force is not necessarily

equal to the weight of the object.
The value of the normal force is
obtained from the equilibrium
equations

PROBLEM 1: Considering only values of
less than 90o, determine the
smallest value of required to start
the block moving to the right if the
weight of the block is 100lb

PROBLEM 2: A 200-N block rests as

shown on a wedge of negligible
weight. The coefficient of static friction
is the same at both surfaces of the
wedge. For P = 100 N, determine the
coefficient of friction for which motion
is impending.
