About the Composition
In any great story from a book, play or movie, there is always an adversary: a character that gets in the
way of the story progressing, causing the necessary tension to give the drama it needs. This piece takes
(on the idea of a musical depiction of the adversary in a drama. You will hear action, aggression and other
‘musical sounds that have been written to bring about this feeling.
‘Students love to play aggressive music like this. The piece uses C minor as the tonal center, but there is
shifting between major and minor tonic chords throughout the piece. The piece begins without introduc
tion right on the bold main theme. The theme is then repeated with a countermelody that floats over the
top of the main theme. The second theme is then heard (based on the countermelody now in the sub-
dominant) and the load is taken up by the homs, trombones, baritones, bassoons and tenor saxophones.
‘The upper woodwinds play the accompaniment figures that are fragments of the main theme. The main
theme retums in a shortened version and then leads to a developmental section that builds tension and
‘adds some new harmonic twists. On the repeat another version of the countermelody/second theme
appears, again floating over the top of the aggressive lines in the rest of the band, The piece retreats,
then builds again to the last statement of the main theme. A short coda ends the composition based on
some of the unique harmonic progressions found earier in the piece.
It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece! I.hope you and your students enjoy
itand find it useful for your program
