insists on their closeness to each other; myth and polytheism are inseparable. As for natural
philosophy (theologia physica or naturalis), Augustine accepts its truthfulness, although he
prefers Platonic Philosophy to Varros Stoic views... It is not surprising that Augustine is much
more critical of Roman state religion than Varro... Christianity was not afraid of scholarship and
science but heavily relied on the liberating force of intellectual pursuits... It might be worth
considering that both the great builders of the Roman State and of the Christian Church
deliberately relied on scholarship and intellectuals qualities rather than on the shaky ground of
