DHAULAGIRI BASE CAMP TREK
15 days, 14 nights

Detailed Itinerary
On arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be met
by our local representative who will transfer you to the hotel. Once checked in
DAY 1 we proceed for brieng and a quick last minute equipment check to ensure we
are in possession of all required items. Kathmandu is the last spot to buy/ rent
any equipment required for the climb. Later we meet for a group dinner.

A beautiful valley set on the banks of the Phewa Lake, Pokhara is also known
for its panoramic views of Annapurna, Machapuchare (sh tail) in the north,
Dhaulagiri in the west, Lamjung Himal and Manaslu in the east. It is smaller
and much less hectic than Kathmandu, hence providing the perfect starting
point for our trek. We proceed onwards from Pokhara to Darbang by road,
which is the starting point of our trek.
DAY 2
The journey begins by leaving Beni and Kali Gandaki. We start the trek by
heading west along the north bank of the Myagdi Khola through the village of
Beni Mangalghat to Singa and Tatopani (hot springs). Crossing the bridge
beyond the village to the south bank of the river, the trail makes a little half
loop before crossing another bridge, near the village of Simalchour, back to
the north bank from where it continues to the village of Darbang.

The valley widens and terraced hills emerge on both sides of the river. The
trail is fairly level and you pass the village of Shahashradhara, cross the Duk
DAY 3 Khola and walk through elds arriving at Ratorunga. From here the valley
narrows again and terraces disappear on either side of the river. Continue to
the village of Takam.

After crossing the river on its west bank as you leave Takam, the trail starts
climbing in earnest and there will be many switch-backs until you arrive at the
ridge. After this the angle of ascent eases. Again the trail climbs steeply to the
villages of Muri. Continue your trek to Sibang and Mattim. From here you
DAY 4
continue up an incline to the snout of the ridge, descend to the Gatti Khola
and reach Phalai Gaon (1,810m). Cross the Dhara Khola to once again emerge
on the west bank of the Myagdi Khola and then climb a ridge to the large
Magar village of Muri, after which we continue on to Naura.

Detailed Itinerary
In the morning, we have a short ascent before traversing a grassy hill and
climbing a steep slope with switch-backs, then descend through a forest and
terraced elds to Boghara (2,080m). The trail rst descends through terraced
elds to a small ridge, then through a forest to Jyardan which is the most
DAY 5
remote permanent settlement in this part. After the settlement a high winding
path crosses a rocky area, which descends before climbing again to Lipshe.
The trail continues through a forest to Lapche Kharka and then climbs to the
level area at Dhovan.
Every passing day into this trek rewards us with stunning views of the ranges
around. We start our day with a short cross over a wooden bridge out of
Dhovan. Following the trail we ascend a forested area which soon brings us to
the rst glimpse of the west face of Dhaulagiri I (8,167m). After capturing the
DAY 6
massive mountain from every angle possible, we commence our journey and
descend to the Myagdi Khola continuing to Chartare. The trail takes us deeper
into the forests again, as we cut across a rocky area and through a stream to
Choriban Khola and onward to Sallaghari which is our stop for the night.
We follow the trail to the terminal moraine of the Chhonbarban Glacier and
enter the glacier from the right. Tukuche Peak (6,837m) becomes visible
straight ahead at the far end while the impressive north ank of Dhaulagiri I
(8,167m) dominates the skyline to your right. From here, a short hike would
DAY 7
bring us to the Italian Base Camp (3,660m), which is also the site of your camp
for the night. To the west are the peaks of Dhaulagiri II (7,751m), Dhaulagiri III
(7,715m) and Dhaulagiri V (7,618m). We have the entire evening to camp
under the shadow of these giants.

Today is left free for us to acclimatize and get used to the altitude change

Books to Read

Touching My Father's Soul by Jamling Tenzing Norgay - Jamling is the son of Tenzing Norgay, one of the rst
two people to ever summit Mt. Everest in 1953. As Jamling follows in his father's footsteps along the same summit in
1996 with the aim to haul an IMAX camera up the summit to shoot a lm, a major storm hits Everest and two
commercial expeditions are dangerously trying to ght their way down the summit. Some lives are even lost. Jamling
recounts the tale of their struggle, but also tells many other stories that shed light on Sherpa history and culture, and
the importance of their strong Buddhist inuence.
Above All Things by Tanis Rideout - This gripping and heartbreaking story is based on George Mallory's third and
nal attempt at climbing Mt. Everest in 1924. It combines historical fact and imaginative ction to tell a story that
heavily focuses on Ruth Mallory's perspective. The novel volleys back and forth between both main characters and
what they were experiencing in two dierent parts of the world all at the same time.

Typical Day on the Trip

Each morning after packing our bags and having a good breakfast, we set o on the day's walk. After walking for 3-4
hours we stop for lunch at around midday. The afternoon's walk is generally shorter and we usually arrive at our
destination in time for afternoon tea. The remainder of the afternoon can be spent exploring the village, doing a bit of
washing or simply relaxing with a good book. On some days we will arrive at our destination by lunchtime and the
entire afternoon will be free. After dinner, the evening will often be spent playing cards and reliving the day's
adventures, before heading o to bed for a well-earned sleep.
