Course Purpose
This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop skills with a variety of art
material. You will be encouraged to practice and experiment with both 2-D and 3-D
techniques. As you move through the lessons, you will hone your skills with a variety
of art mediums while developing your own ideas through creative thinking,
communication and artistic practice.

Art 10 includes activities in drawing, painting, design, ceramics, sculpture, zines, artist
trading cards and mixed media. You will be encouraged to explore your imagination as
well as learn about art history, the contemporary art community and gain new cultural
and historical understandings through art.

Course Activities and Assignments

Students in Art 10 will have the opportunity to experience many diverse mediums in
their assignments. Opportunities to work in pencil, charcoal, pastels, paint, collage, clay
and mixed media will be available

Each unit is designed with skill building practise activities and assignments, which will
be evaluated to demonstrate the newly learned skills. Additional elements such as
artist talks and critiques will take place as well. Art class is a place for experiential
learningthis means hands on work, initiative and participation are absolutely
required. You may not opt out of any work or assignments due to lack of readiness,
improper dress or lack of interest. Be prepared to get messy. Your participation will be
graded.

Unit Summary (subject to change due to interest and time)

Drawing: practice exercises, contour, value, form, perspective, self portrait

Clay: pinch pot sculpture, small plates

Watercolor: still life, perspective

Design Principles: balance, emphasis, scale, rhythm/pattern, unity, contrast, harmony,


proximity, variety & Elements: color, texture, shape, line

Zines: responding to a variety of themes


Goals of the Art 10-20-30 Program
Students will DRAW
record, investigate, communicate, articulate and evaluate their image making
acquire a repertoire of approaches to recording visual information
develop the ability to investigate visual relationships in their recorded images
and in the environment
express technical competencies and individual insights
apply visual, analytical and critical skills and develop control and competency
Students will create COMPOSITIONS
develop competence with the components of images: media, techniques and
design elements
analyze the relationships among components of images
express meaning through control of visual relationships

investigate natural form, human made forms, cultural traditions and social
activities as sources of imagery through time and across cultures
understand that the role and form of art differs through time and across cultures
understand that art reflects and affects cultural character

Art 10 Scope and Sequence


Students will work towards the following:
combine description, expression and cognition in the drawing process

develop and refine drawing skills and styles

investigate varieties of expression in making images

use the vocabulary and techniques of art criticism to analyze their own work

extend their knowledge of familiarity with the elements and principles of design
through practise in composing two and three- dimensional images

solve teacher directed problems of unity and emphasis in creating compositions

solve spatial problems of movement and direction in compositions

use the vocabulary of art criticism to develop and analyze their own work

experiment with various representational formats

be conscious of the emotional impact that is caused and shaped by a work of art

investigate the process of abstracting in order to create objects and images

compare the image content of certain periods

become aware of the relationship between function and form in artistic


productions
Evaluation

The work completed in this course will belong in one of two categories:

Process Work includes practise exercises, sketchbook assignments, research


assignments, participation in class activities and mini critiques and zine pages.
Assignments in this category are meant to build and grow the practise, planning,
research and exploration skills that are necessary in any art making process.
This work will be weighted at 40% of the final mark.

Formal Compositions includes the drawing assignments and their accompanying


critiques and artist statements. Compositions in watercolor, clay and mixed media will
be graded on the rubric included with each assignment.
This work will be weighted at 60% of the final mark.

Expectations

Please be in class on time, ready to work, with all required materials. Always bring
your sketchbook, pencils, etc.

Attendance is extremely important. Class time will be used to work on assignments.


Lecture material, peer reviews and discussions will inform and enhance your art skills -
be here on time to maximize your learning. Chinook Attendance Policy will be
enforced.

All assignments must be completed on the due date. Please ensure that all components
are completed on the due, particularly if we are critiquing the work. The critique dates
for all assignments are listed on the assignment timeline and will be discussed at length
during classes. Late assignments will only be accepted if it has been specifically
discussed with your instructor.

Electronics and phones are not permitted in the art room. Please keep them in your bag
or locker. Occasionally, electronics use may be permitted as it relates to assignments
and research work. You instructor will let you know if this is the case. Texting and
email are specifically not permitted.

The Art Room, like the entire school, is a place of inclusion and respect. It is expected
that you will bring an attitude of peace, co-operation and maturity to this space.
