1 SCOPE
This specification establishes the minimum requirements for the fabrication, inspection
and testing necessary to furnish Electrowinning cells, including all necessary
accessories, but specifically exclude word listed in Section 2. All are part of the
Toromocho Project, property of Minera Chinalco Peru S.A., located in central Peru in the
Morococha Mining District, Yauli Province, Junin Department.
Vendor shall furnish drawings, data and descriptive information in the detail and quantity
required by this specification, the Vendor Document Requirement Schedule (VDRS) and
Appendix M, Installation, Operation & Maintenance (IOM) Manuals.
The Vendor's scope of supply shall include, but is not limited to items in the
following list:
1.2 Erection
2 WORK EXCLUDED
Design shall comply with all standards and codes stated in this and attached
specifications (see Appendix A), MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration)
standards, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards, and all
local laws, ordinances, and regulations.
In the event of difference between codes and/or standards, the most stringent code or
standard shall apply. Whenever reference is made in an Equipment Specification to a
specific code or standard, it shall be understood that the latest edition of such reference,
as of the date of proposal, shall govern.
Site data and general engineering requirements are as specified in Appendix A. Vendor
shall pay particular attention to the elevation of the site, which is 4,540 to 5,000 meters
above mean sea level. All equipment shall be designed to meet the specified capacities
at this elevation.
Operating and design conditions and requirements are specified in the attachment titled
Data Sheets A, Operating and Design Conditions.
The cells will be filled with copper sulfate/sulfuric acid electrolyte as described in the
data sheets and will be loaded with 36 stainless steel permanent cathode plates. These
are interleaved with 37 lead anodes with a spacing of 51 mm (TBC) between anode and
cathode. The electrodes are carried as a distributed load on copper intercell bus bars,
which are placed on top of the side walls of the cells. Occasionally a shorting frame
(jumper frame) busbar will be placed with one edge along the cathode/anode bars.
Current passes through the suspension bar at one end which rests on the triangular
contact point of an intercell busbar. The other end of the suspension bar rests on an
insulator spacer capblock on the intercell wall.
The electrolyte shall be fed into the cell via a valved inlet pipe passing over the end cell
wall opposite the overflow box and distributed by an internal PVC pipe for which Vendors
shall provide adequate support.
Acid mist generated in the cell by anodic oxygen evolution is reduced by floating layers
of plastic balls or beads with a low dosage of a foaming reagent. These floating layers
can accumulate organic phase as specified in the data sheets.
Cells shall be provided with outside blocks to support the FRP operating platform.
Cells are in 365 day per year service, but are removed from service every [six] months
for cleaning of lead anode slimes
5.1 General
The equipment shall be manufacturer's standard size and heavy-duty design suitable for
the conditions specified.
The cells shall be capable of supporting anodes, cathodes, deposited copper, busbar
shorting frame, etc. and electrolyte during normal electrowinning operations.
In the event that the tankhouse crane should drop some of the load of either anodes or
cathodes, the cells shall resist cracking or complete failure of the cell bottom.
The electrodes may fall from a position with their bottom edges up to 1 m above the cell
top.
The overflow box and/or decant system shall be cast as an integral part of the cell. The
inlet side shall be designed to resist mechanical damage and maximize flow during
normal operations. The outlet downcomer from the overflow box must be incorporated
into the outer wall of the box so it provides a half round "Marquadson" type weir and
another weir that visually allows the operator to determine the electrolyte flow at the cell
discharge.
Vendor must include all necessary materials and tools to repair the cells for the first year
of operation.
All aggregate shall be sized so that the resin will entirely wet out the surface of
the aggregate.
All aggregate shall be dry materials that are inherently resistant to corrosion from
the electrolyte solutions and gasses generated. The aggregate mixture shall
contain either mica flakes or equivalent strands for additional reinforcement and
will be at least 10% by weight of resin.
The vinylester concrete shall be reinforced as required using FRP rebar or other
equivalent nonconductive reinforcement and shall be free of any steel
reinforcement or any other electrically conductive materials.
The interior and exterior of the vinylester concrete cells shall have a pigmented
modified vinylester gel coat backed with a resin rich layer of unmodified
vinylester gel coat with a continuous reinforcement filler.
5.3 Cells
The interior, including the inside bottom of the cell shall have smooth, mold
contacted surfaces for ease of cleaning cap discharge and discharge. The
exterior shall also have a mold contacted surface. Vendor shall indicate resin's
manufacturer standard colors available for Owner's approval. Manufacturing
tolerances are to be 2 mm or better for length, depth and width. All walls must
be within 1 mm of verticality on outside walls and wall curvature cannot exceed
0.5 mm per linear meter. Diagonal accuracy is to be better than 13 mm and
the top wall thickness must be within 1.5 mm of that specified. Inserts and
fittings must be within 1.5 mm of their location, as shown.
Vendors are to indicate their fabrication technique and what steps are taken to
ensure quality.
Vendors are to provide a statement on fire retardancy of their product and how
this is achieved.
The overflow box must be cast as an integral part of the cell and be of rigid and
substantial construction to resist mechanical damage.
The cell shall not have any cold joints or glued sections.
6.1 Assembly
6.2 Testing
Visual inspection to determine the acceptance of the cells will be carried out.
Cracks of greater than 0.25 mm width will cause rejection, as will any cracks
present in the cell corners.
Each cell must be filled with water for 24 hours, and its outside walls must be dry
after this period.
The cells will be tested for porosity and conductivity. The Vendor shall indicate in
his bid his proposed methods of testing
All openings in the equipment shall be sealed to exclude foreign matter during
shipment. Flanges shall be provided with wooden covers bolted in place in order
to protect the flange face.
A label on the cell must indicated vendor, fabrication number, year of fabrication,
resin used. This label must be fixed in a clearly visible location on the cell end
wall and be overcoated by clear resin.
Vendor shall guarantee his equipment for the specified operating and design conditions.
Vendor shall state his guarantee for the porosity and conductivity of the cells.
Vendor shall guarantee the performance of the cell system, including full replacement of
detective units, for five years from the date of installation with respect to chemical or
mechanical damage.
