Learning Styles and ELL Students

For my learning styles outcome, I determined how I learned in five different aspects.

According to the quiz, I learned that I am a visual learner compared to an auditory learner. I learn

better through reading, studying pictures, and looking at graphs. I also gathered from the quiz

that I am an applied learner, or I prefer real concepts and examples. I am a verbal learner,

meaning I favor verbal and language skills. The quiz also told me that I am a social learner rather

than an independent learner, and work better with interaction with others. Finally, I learned that I

am a creative learner, and learn through discovery and experimentation.

These learning styles can be an advantage to English Language Learners (ELL) because

they are universal. No matter what language one speaks, to be a visual learner or social learner

can be applied in any classroom through techniques implemented by the teacher. For example, if

an ELL student is struggling with the teachers method of lecturing the material, it could be

beneficial to the student if visuals were applied or hands-on approaches were taken.

For the five areas I received as a learner, there are different methods that can be

implemented. As a visual learner, a teacher can use PowerPoint and Smart Boards to engage the

students. For an applied learner, the teacher can make the questions on assessments or in class

related to the students. This way, it becomes a real-life application. A teacher can reach verbal

learners through clear and concise directions on every assignment. For social learners, a teacher

can create assignments that allow for small groups, and have students share ideas with one

another. For creative learners, a teacher can give students a variety of formats to display their

knowledge, rather than just an essay or a test. They could create a song or diorama to show their

understanding on the subject.
