Lab Experience 04 - Heat Transfer Mechanisms
Lab Experience 04 - Heat Transfer Mechanisms
Objective: To study the heat transfer mechanisms and to compare the effect of materials nature
in heat transfer by temperature difference.
What are the mechanisms of heat transfer? How do you model it (how do you calculate it)? Three
applications are?
Put two different kind of solid materials (metal and isolation) on a hot plate and measure the
temperature as a function of time. Plot the data. Describe your measurements and observations
with detail. What mechanism controls the heat transfer?
Build a cooling curve for same quantity of water (at same temperature) one in a metallic container
and the other in a Dewar flask. Discuss in detail.
Write a question by person (specify the author) about the laboratory practice you want to be
explained or demonstrated experimentally.
To review at home:
Compare the theoretical end experimental quantity of energy used to heat water and oil. Does the
experimental data fit the theoretical prediction?
How much money do you saved when store hot water in the Dewar flask compared with a glass
beaker?
