The new system improves field serviceability and is based on the concept that each engine family has
its own basic harness. Components which are common to all engine families have been redesigned to
allow them to simply plug into all “basic” harnesses.
The plug-in components include temperature, pressure switches, magnetic pickup, low coolant level sensor,
governor and speed switch.
The redesign also includes better wiring insulation and more reliable wire terminals, making a single
integrated wiring harness.
The new wiring/control system includes two changes in design:
1. Precise control is over the allowable current flow through the new integrated harness via a new
circuit breaker.
2. The separate wiring interconnects have been replaced by printed circuit boards.
Engine instruments on left side and generator instruments on right side.

The new circuit breaker is a magnetic breaker which has been sized to provide proper performance and
maximum protection.
To assure adequate protection the following points must be followed:
1. All accessory loads must be individually fused and connected to the starter motor battery cable terminals.
2. Any battery charger connected to the system must be connected as in No. 1 above. The charger must
have built-in overcurrent protection. This protection is included in Cummins battery charger Part No.

HOW TO USE THIS INFORMATION
This section contains a detailed example of how the various drawings and diagrams included in the appendix
‘may be used to evaluate and troubleshoot the new integrated wiring system.
Figure A shows a photograph of a generator set using a new engine control panel (not a generator conduit
box mounted “mini-panel”). The relationship between the actual hardware and a respective single line diagram
is shown. Further, the schematic diagram which provides detailed information regarding each single line
diagram is shown
In this manner, the technician will be able to associate a piece of hardware (such as a magnetic pickup
unit) with a specific harness (engine harness) with a single line drawing block (single line diagram 3037462)
with an actual schematic drawing (drawing 3037464)
Figure B shows the schematics which appear at the bottom of Figure A. Highlighted in Figure B is the circuit
of wire number 4. Notice that almost all circuits are numbered according to the terminal strip terminal to.
which they are connected.
For example, any circuit which connects to terminal 4 is numbered 4. There are no longer any circuit numbers
such as 3441, 34-2, and so on. There are four circuits which do not follow the above rule. They are the circuits
connected to terminals 34, 45, 46, and 47,
