Relative clauses

1. La frase relativa in genere introdotta da pronomi relativi invariabili nel genere e nel numero:
WHO riferito a persone (che, il quale, la quale )
WHICH riferito a cose o animali (che, il quale, la quale )
THAT riferito a persone, cose e animali (sostituisce WHO o WHICH)
WHOSE riferito a persone, cose e animali, indica possesso (il cui, la cui )

2. I pronomi relativi possono essere utilizzati in funzione di soggetto o c. oggetto

Soggetto
Si utilizzano i pronomi WHO e WHICH. Possono essere entrambi sostituiti dal pronome THAT nel registro informale. Devono essere
sempre espressi.

Ex. The policeman stopped the man who/that was driving too fast.
Dont wear pullovers which/that are too big for you.

3. Pronomi relativi preceduti da preposizione (Il THAT non pu mai essere preceduto da preposizione.)

WHICH
Il pronome relative pu anche essere omesso e la preposizione viene inserita generalmente dopo il verbo della frase relativa.

Ex. Who is the lady to whom you have just spoken? Who is the lady you have just spoken to?
The song to which you are listening is nice. The song you are listening to is nice.

4. Whose (indica possesso)


Ex. I know the man whose daughter works at Buckingham Palace. (Conosco luomo la cui figlia lavora a )
The book whose author is known worldwide sells well. (Il libro il cui autore conosciuto in tutto il mondo )

5. When, Where, Why


When sostituisce la struttura in / on which The day when (on which) we met was my birthday.
Where sostituisce la struttura in / at which The city where (in which) I live is clean.
Why sostituisce la struttura for which The reason why (for which) he married her isnt clear.

6. Defining clauses Non-defining clauses


Si possono distinguere due tipi di subordinate relative:
Defining clauses: che danno informazioni necessarie per comprendere il messaggio.
Ex. It a man who wants to sell an encyclopaedia to us.
Non-defining clauses: che aggiungono informazioni non essenziali alla comprensione del messaggio. Di solito si trovano
tra virgole. In queste frasi il pronome THAT non viene utilizzato e i pronomi relativi non vengono mai omessi.
Ex. Laura, who is also very pretty, won the tennis competition.
