MEDIEVAL CASTLES

Chinon Castle
First tower built 954 by Theobald, Count of Blois
Acquired by Henry II of England in 1156, who added to the castle until his death, 1189
Tour du Coudray (Coudray Tower) built by King Philip Augustus after 1205

Angers Castle
Site of a Roman settlement; first castle dated from 9th century
Present castle built 1230-42
Outer wall 9.8 feet thick, protected by 17 towers, each one 59 feet in diameter
Each tower was originally 130 feet high, but they were cut down by Henry III after 1585,
to enable the use of artillery

Chaumont Castle
Site of 10th century fortress bult by Odo, Count of Blois
Castle constructed 1469-1481, then 1498-1510
Owned by Queen Catherine de Medici of France from 1550 onward; in 1559, when her
husband Henry II died, she forced his mistress Diane de Poitiers to give up
the Chteau of Chenonceau and allowed her to live at Chaumont

The Louvre, Paris


Built by King Philip Augustus, 1190-1202 on the right (north) bank of the Seine River)
Expanded by King Charles V, c. 1365-80

Palais de la Cit (Palace of the City), Paris


Site of Roman governors palace, on Island of the City (in Seine River), c. 50 B.C.
Occupied by Clovis, first King of the Franks, 508-11 A.D., enlarged by many later kings
