22 - 11 = 11 neutrons

What is an isotope. HL Only.

Sometimes the same element can have different numbers of neutrons.

But there protons and electrons stay the same.
Elements with different neutrons are called isotopes.
Koosh Ball Practice
(Dont forget to look up the atomic number on the PT)

How many neutrons are in Uranium (U) with a mass of 238? 146

How many neutrons are in Gold (Au) with a mass of 197? 118

How many neutrons are in Helium (He) with a mass of 4? 2

How many neutrons are in Palladium (Pd) with a mass of 106? 60

What is the Average Atomic Mass?

The average atomic mass is the bottom number that you see on
the PT.

It is the average mass of the different isotopes for an

element.

You wont ever have to calculate this number since its

on the PT.
What is the Average Atomic Mass?

If you ever have a problem where the mass is not given

to you, then look it up on the PT and round to nearest
whole number.

If you ever have a problem where the mass is not given

to you, then look it up on the PT and round to nearest
whole number.

For example 18.998 rounds to 19.
