Purpose and the use of Axisymmetric Analysis

Axisymmetric analysis is carried out when there is a geometric and


loading symmetry about an axis of the body that is being analysed. Due to
this rotational symmetry about an axis a 3- dimensional problem can be
analysed as a 2- dimensional model generating the same result. [CITATION

A finite element modal of the pressure vessel was generated as shown in
the figure below, preventing motion in the perpendicular direction of the
axis of symmetry. The modelling was carried out using simple
quadrilateral axisymmetric elements and the location of the maximum
stress was identified. The contour plot of the von Mises stress for the
pressure vessel is given and this type of data representation is used by
many industries to determine the failure criterion their designs.
