Pellet Boiler P2:

l, convenient, safe.
Economical
Thanks to the unique burner technology employed on the Pellet
Boiler P2, pellet consumption is very low; pellets have an
efficiency rating of 93%. Not only is wood an
environment-friendly fuel, it is also available in
sustainable quantities. Woodworking industries produce
a huge amount of wood waste which can be taken
untreated and pressed into pellets. Wood waste is in
plentiful supply. This combined with the relatively short
delivery distances between the producer and consumer has
made wood one of the most cost-effective fuels in recent years.

Clean & convenient

Heating with the Pellet Boiler P2 has little in common
with traditional wood heating systems.
The pellets are delivered by tanker and
blown into your wood store. Once the boiler
is switched on everything functions
automatically. Combustion is very clean and
environmentally friendly. As a rule, the
mobile ashcan only requires emptying
between once and three times a year.
Ash can be recycled as a natural fertiliser.

Innovative burner technology

Frling had developed the shell
burner to make it ideal for
burning pellets.
Excellent combustion
efficiency, optimum
control, self-cleaning.
Three factors which
make this burner
ideal for pellet heating
systems.

Automatic ash removal

The Pellet Boiler P2 makes life easier with a unique,
fully-automatic ash removal system. The ash from the shell
burner drops down into a hot ash chamber where any unburned
particles are completely incinerated. Ash from the combustion
chamber and self-cleaning residues from the heat exchanger
drop down onto a feed screw where they are compressed
and fed out into the ashcan.

Easy-to-service design
The high-tech Pellet Boiler P2 has been designed with easy
servicing in mind. All parts are readily accessible and servicing
requires little effort. Not only do you save on heating costs,
you save on servicing costs, too.

Unique back-fire safety
The double-gate pellet feeder ensures that the fire stays where it should,
in the combustion chamber. The pellet feed system is designed with an air
tight seal separating it from the combustion chamber. The highest safety
standards are guaranteed.

Modular heating control

The next-generation
Lambdatronic control unit
makes Frling a leader for
modern heating technology.
A pioneer that others follow.
Perfect combustion control
incorporating Lambda
technology means that our
system can control up to four
heating circuits, various backup
and auxiliary systems and even, for example, a solar panel system.
You can display and modify control settings from a digital control
panel in your home. You can do the same thing using a PC and a
modem. The computer monitors your equipment and then sends
the information over the digital controller or the PC direct to your
home or office. You can also use a PC and a modem to access
Frlings remote system setting and maintenance service.
This saves valuable time and money. The system is modular and
you can expand the basic module, upgrading a step at a time as
required, whenever you want.

Prepared for everything

In an emergency the Pellet Boiler P2 can also be used with firewood.
You run out of pellets. No problem. Just fit the special grate and you
can continue to fire the boiler with chopped logs and retain fully
automatic operation. Any time.

Automatic Clean Efficient

The upright tubular heat exchanger has built-in turbulators to provide increased
thermal efficiency. A vertical tube design was chosen because this aids efficient.
Self-cleaning is automatic and carried out by the motor driven tube turbulators.

Simple pellet feed straight to your
boiler:
1. Direct feed with a feed screw
Ideally the boiler room and the pellet store are alongside each other. In this case the pellet feed
screw is mounted in the pellet store and feeds the pellets direct to the boiler in the neighbouring
boiler room. This solution is neat, simple and reliable.

Weekly pellet store

The weekly pellet store

Not enough room for a large pellet tank? You have low-energy house and low energy requirements and dont need a
big storage tank?. For situations like these the weekly pellet store is the most cost-effective solution to ensure that
you can enjoy the efficiency of P2 heating.

2. Combined feed screw and suction turbine

designed a special feed system. Here, the pellet store feed screw is combined with a powerful
suction turbine to assist pellet feed. The system will feed pellets over a distance of up to 15 metres
and with a height difference of one floor. This system has a daily tank with automatic level control
to ensure that the daily tank gets topped up once a day. Another simple, efficient system from Frling.

Buried tank

Buried tank
When space indoors is at a premium and there is no room for a pellet tank, a buried pellet tank is the ideal solution.
The tank can be buried outdoors in your garden. Only an unobtrusive filler cover shows that it is there. A suction feed
tube connects the tank to the P2. Any excavation work can be carried out at the same time that your tank is delivered.

Wood pellets
Wood pellets - fuel of the future

The ideal fuel for comfortable, environment-friendly heating.

Pellets have a high energy density and are easy to deliver and store. These are just
some of the advantages that make pellets the perfect fuel for fully-automatic heating
systems.
Wood pellets are 100% wood and are made by compressing dry, natural wood waste
into cylindrical pellets with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of between 5 to 30 mm.
They are sold by weight with 1 m3 of pellet weighing 650 kg.

2 kg pellets 1 litre (approx.) heating oil

1000 litres heating oil 3 m3 (approx.) storage space

Pellet are delivered by tanker which unloads the pellets directly into the your wood store. When you buy pellets you
should pay particular attention to the quality offered. Only use pellets from an approved manufacturer certified to
the latest standards. This is your guarantee of pellet quality.

In Austria the following standards apply:

Pellets approved as per NORM M 7135 standard and/or DINplus standard

In Germany the following standards apply:

Pellets as per DIN 51731, Certification Scheme DINplus and/or NORM M 7135 standard

Heating the environment-friendly way

When trees grow they take carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the air. When we burn wood
this carbon dioxide is returned to the atmosphere. The amount of CO2 released during
burning is the same as the amount released by normal rotting and decay in forests and
woods. Heating with pellets is therefore heating the natural, environment-friendly way.

Changing over to pellets

More and more home owners are considering changing over to a pellet boiler. The reasons are clear. Pellet supplies
are plentiful and not subject to the crises and fluctuations of heating oil supplies. When planning a pellet heating
system the first thing to look at is your existing heating system because this will be part of your new system. An oil tank
room can usually be converted into a pellet store without any problems. In most cases you can continue to use existing
radiators and circulation pumps. Pellet-fired boilers need a moisture-resistant chimney so it will be necessary to have
the chimney examined and approved by a specialist.

Official support for wood-fired heating:

Regional governments have support programmes for encouraging the changeover to heating systems using renewable
energy sources. For more details on the amount of support available, contact your local government offices or visit our
internet site at www.froeling.com.

Fuel feed and back-fire protection - Patented pellet valve:

Modern pellet-fired systems have a fuel

feed valve which acts as a back-fire
protection.

The problem:
The standard rotary valves used for back-
fire protection have the drawback that they
pulverise a lot of the pellet fuel thus causing
high dust levels in the feed system.

The solution:
The Frling pellet valve has been designed
exclusively for use with pellets, handling the
pellets gently without creating dust. The
valve has a unique twin-chamber system
that practically eliminates the risk of back-
fire. The precision seal surfaces prevent the
entry of any leakage air which might
otherwise interfere with efficient
combustion.

1
Seal surfaces:
The two seal surfaces between the rotor
and the valve body are machined to fine
tolerances to ensure a tight fit and guar-
antee that no leakage air can enter.

9
Layout and measurements

Layout of the pellet store

s (max.)
30 metre

The pellets are delivered by tanker and blown into the store
through a filler pipe. A second pipe is used to extract dust from
the store. To power the extractor fan we recommend that you
provide an easily-accessible power supply socket close to the filler
pipe coupling.

There is a limit to the filler hose length that can be used.

The store should be located not more than 30 metres away from where the tanker will be pumping.
Ideally, the pellet store should have at least one outside wall where the filler pipes will be installed.
The location of the pellet store must also comply with local fire prevention regulations.

The store premises must of course be dry. Damp will cause the pellets to swell and break up.

10
Pellet store
Size and shape of the pellet store

The store should be able to hold 1.2 to 1.5 times your yearly pellet requirement. Experience shows that a detached
house with 150 m2 of living space will need a store room with a floor area of 6 - 8 m2. The exact amount of space
required depends on the system's heat output. You can use this rule of thumb to calculate the size of the store room
(plus the unused space):

1 m3 of store space per kW of heat output

Example: P2-15 pellet boiler

Boiler with 15 kW heat output = 15 m3 store space including unused space

15 m3 store space / 2.5 m store height = 6 m2 store area

For both the screw feeder system and the universal suction system, the store room should be small and rectangular in
order to ensure that the empty, unused space in the corners is kept as low as possible.

1
The store must not be filled to the top.
You should leave a gap for the air to circulate
above the pellets. 1

2
The sides of the store need to slope at an
angle of 45; this means that there will be
empty, unused space under the store 3
construction.

3
The actual volume storage volume for pellets
is the volume of the room minus the volume 2 2
of the empty space. In most cases two-thirds
of a room's volume will be available for
storage.

For the example above we can calculate:

Example: P2-15 pellet boiler

15 m3 store volume x 2/3 = 10 m3 actual store volume available

10 m3 pellets = 6,500 kg pellets (equivalent to 3,250 litres heating oil)

11
Details und construction

1
Walls and ceilings:
The walls and ceilings of the store room and of the boiler room must be fire-proof in compliance
with local regulations. Any gaps around holes made in walls must be filled with insulating
material in compliance with the standards NORM B 3836 or DIN 4102-11. The store room
must be airtight. This is to prevent dust escaping during filling and to prevent the entry of
warm, damp air which could lead to a build up of condensation inside the store.

2
Store room door - wooden boards:
The store room door must be a fire door with a Class T30
fire resistance rating; it must have a seal. On the inside of
the room you should install wooden boards to stop the
pellets pressing against the door.

T30 fire door

Z-profile Wooden boarding

(approx. 3 cm)

3
Filler pipes:
The pellets are blown into the store through filler pipes in the centre. Any dust
created in the store during filling is extracted through a second pipe. For technical
data about the pipe couplings, see page 14.

4
Buffer mat:
A buffer mat made from rubber should be posi-
tioned opposite the filler pipes at approximately
200 mm

20 cm from the wall. During filling the mat stops

the pellets from hitting the wall and breaking up.
The mat also stops the pellets from knocking plas-
ter or cement rendering off the wall.
Frling can supply sections of buffer mat measur-
ing 140 x 120 cm.

5
Sloping sides:
In order to ensure that the pellet store empties completely, it should be built with sloping sides. The construc-
tion of the sloping sides is of primary importance. For technical details about the sloping sides, see page 15.

12
Pellet store

There should be no sources of ignition in the pellet store.

There should therefore be no electrical installations in the store.

The pellet store must be dry. Damp will cause the pellets to swell and break up.
There should therefore be no water pipes in the store.

13
Details und construction

Filler pipes

The filler pipes have Storz Type A - 110 couplings to be

fitted when the boiler system is installed. The hole in the
wall for the pipes must have a diameter of at least 150 mm.
If you are installing the filler pipe in a lighting well you should
fit the coupling pipe section with a 45elbow bend. Both versions
are available from Frling in kits complete with a coupling cap and
earth screw. To protect against unauthorised opening, the caps can
be locked using any commercially available padlock.
Frling can supply any pipe extensions or 45 bends necessary.

Without lighting well With lighting well

100 mm
200 mm

3
4
2

1
Half room width 500 mm
Rotation protection:
The pipes must be bricked in or
cemented into the brickwork to pre-
vent them from rotating. Pipes must
be secured firmly to stop them from
rotating. Pipes which are fixed in
300 mm

place using foam compounds will

probably rotate when the coupling is
attached.

2
Earth:
The filler pipes must be earthed in
order to prevent the build up of elec-
trostatic discharges.

3
Metal pipes:
Do not use metal pipes which have
welds on the inside. The welds will
cause the pellets to break up when
they pass through the pipe.

4
Angle bends:
Use 45 angle bends for lighting
wells. Do not use 90 angle bends.
14
Pellet store
Sloping sides

In order to support the weight of pellets, the sloping sides of the store must have a strong supporting framework.
The framework should be dimensioned so that the sloping sides are not deformed when subject to static loads.
You should remembers that 1 m of pellets weighs approximately 650 kg.

You should ensure that the pellets can slide smoothly down the sides. This means that the sloping sides must slope at
an angle of at least 45 and must have a smooth surface. In order to ensure that the pellets slide downwards smoothly,
there should be no edges, projections or steps in the sides.

sizes and the distance between
the wooden cross-slats should be

Pellet feeder systems
Screw feeder system

Feeding the pellets out of the store with a feed screw is a well-established method and is used primarily where the
store is close to the boiler room. The feed screw is installed in the store and conveys the pellets over the back-fire
protection to the boiler which can be fed from both the left or the right sides. The design of this system is simple and
reliable.

Note on store layout and construction:

In addition to the layout details given above you should also note the following points about store construction:

The slope of the framework must match the slope of the You should also ensure that the weight of the pellets

the wall and the floor.

Do not fix or cement the transfer trough to the brickwork. Fixing the transfer trough to the brickwork will
create a bridge transferring all mechanical noise and vibration to the brickwork.

Flexible, space-saving

Bag silo system

The bag silo system is a flexible,

simple way for storing pellets.

There are other advantages to using a bag silo.

It is easy to assemble and store. It is dustproof and flood proof.
You can fit rainproof and sun proof covers and install the silo outside.

The pellets are fed by the suction box along two flexible hoses to the boiler's day store.
The suction unit can be installed to the left or to the right of the boiler.
You should position and install the bag silo in conformity with local fire prevention regulations.

Bag silo sizes:

Choose a silo size to match the heat output rating of your boiler. As a general rule we recommend that you
choose a silo which is large enough to hold your yearly pellet supply.
The following bag silo types are available:

2) When full, the bag silo has a heap shape. The ideal height shown is for a bag silo completely filled with pellets with a loose bulk
density of 650kg/m3.

Universal or space saving

Universal suction system

The universal suction system is designed for those situation where the store is not next door to the boiler
room and the pellets have to be fed over a considerable distance. With a hose length of 15 metres,
pellets can be fed to the next floor up. Once again the suction unit can be mounted to the left or to the
right of the boiler. The system is easy to install and very reliable.

Three suction probes positioned uniformly in the store ensure trouble-free pellet feed and guarantee that
the store empties uniformly. Changeover between the suction probes is manual or fully automatic as
required.

Note on store layout and construction:

The suction probes must be equidistant

and must be fixed to the floor.

The probes must be in the middle

between the sloping sides at a distance
of 10 cm from the sides.

To ensure optimum emptying of the

store, the cross-pieces to the left and
right of the probes must have a height of
15 cm.

For square store rooms there is a special version of the
universal suction unit with a single probe only.

Underground feeder tank system

If you have no storage space indoors then

the underground tank is a good alternative.
The underground tank is buried outdoors and
feeds pellets to the boiler over suction pipes.
The suction pipes should be laid inside a hol-
low pipe from the underground tank to the
building.

The underground tank is filled through a filler

hatch above the tank.

Standards, directives, versions, design information

Installing heating systems / Standards

The following standards govern the installation of heating systems:

NORM / DIN EN 12828 Heating Systems in Buildings

Austria: - Closed systems as per NORM B 8131

- Open systems as per NORM B 8130
Germany: - Closed systems as per DIN 4751 Part 2
- Open systems as per DIN 4751 Part 1

Ventilation of boiler room

The openings for the fresh air and the exhaust air should be arranged as nearly opposite each other as
possible to achieve a good thermal draught effect.

The fresh air must be drawn in directly from the outside. The exhaust air must be discharged directly to
the outside.

Reference standard: - TRVB H 118

- NORM H 5170

Calculating the opening cross-section:

According to NORM H 5170 standard, the fresh air opening cross section per kW of the boiler rated
power is 2 cm and the minimum total cross section is 200 cm.

Requirements for hot water supplies

There are no special requirements for domestic hot water supplies. Applicable standards:

Austria: NORM H 5195, NORM H 5195-2

Germany: VDI 2035

The water used to top-up or refill boilers must be softened beforehand to prevent the build up of
limescale.

Fire prevention regulations

Austria:
In Austria the fire prevention technical directive TRVB H118 applies. Local variations to these regulations
should also be taken into account. Your installer will be glad to provide you with further details.

Germany:
In Germany, systems with an output of less than 50 kW are not subject to the directives but are subject
to heating systems legislation. For more information you should contact the authorities responsible.

Other countries:
Other countries have a variety of directives, reference standards and regulations regarding heating
systems. You should contact the local authority responsible.

26
Technical data
Chimney connection / chimney system

The standard EN 303-5 specifies that the entire flue gas system must be designed to prevent, wherever possible,
damage caused by seepage, insufficient feed pressure and condensation.

It should be noted here that flue gas temperatures of less than 160 K above
room temperature can occur within the permitted operating range of the boiler.

Design information:

The connection between the boiler and the chimney system should be as short
as possible. The upward angle of the connection should not exceed 30 - 45.
Insulate the connection.

When installing the connection you should take into account local standards
and regulations. 1

1
Draught limiter:
The best position for installing a draught limiter is in the chimney under the
flue gas pipe mouth because there is always under-pressure at this point.
