Exercise Two

California State University of Northridges Panhellenic Council hosted their annual Bid

Day on Tuesday, September 12th. The week consists of a four day recruitment process ending in

Bid Day, the day where each potential new member receives their offer into a house that they

like but which has to mutually want them back. In celebration of this event, the sorority Alpha

Phi posted a photograph on their Instagram including Amanda Lee Kurtyan and Nicole Clark

holding a poster displaying the sentence Welcome to the A Phi List. Through the sign the two

girls are holding, the chapter promotes that being known as an Alpha Phi instantly makes you

part of the A-List, which is the highest level of recognition a sorority sister may achieve on

campus. The sisters of the house imply that Alpha Phi is the most superior home away from

home for new members because not only do they have a high work ethic when it comes to

school, but they are outgoing, kind, and compassionate toward one another. To live up to their

primal reputation, they welcome the new members to the knowledge of their status as the #1

house on the University campus. Though, Instagram viewers who may not be a part of the CSUN

Alpha Phi chapter may think otherwise of the chapter being considered top house. In order to

encourage the idea that they reign the title, Alpha Phi chooses two new member sisters who are

smiling and enhancing the fact that being a part of the chapter brings girls pure bliss even from

the beginning of their journey as an A-Lister. The image suggests that individuals both in and out

of Greek life should support this specific group of sisters because as their caption states, a life as

a Phi is a PHI-nominal life. As the audience may scroll through the comments on this

photograph, they will recognize the amount of support that new members and active members

show toward their chapter. This Instagram post was a glimpse at Alpha Phi bliss and the joy that

comes along with being part of the A-List.
