PFLASA NEWS – Welcome back and first meeting Firefighter Academy program may be cut by the city
Schedules Have Been Mailed – see below for the insert sent included.
PFLASA NEWS Welcome back to "Lots of LASA," your main source of news and information about LASA. We hope you have been enjoying the summer! PFLASA (Parents and Friends of LASA) is gearing up to a great year working together with the LASA community. If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact this year's PFLASA co-chairs, Ana Irizarry at email@example.com and Francie Kelley at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can always find the contact information at the bottom of each "Lots of LASA." The first PFLASA meeting of the year is on Friday, September 3 at 8:00 am in the library. Please join us! Parents are always welcome to any and all of our meetings. LBJ/LASA Firefighter Academy program may be cut The City of Austin has included the LBJ/LASA Firefighter Academy on its list of proposed program cuts. If eliminated, then the graduation plans of both LASA and LBJ students will be jeopardized – especially critical for 2010-11 seniors who are half-way through the program. For juniors and seniors, the course satisfies physical education or technology credit requirements for graduation; so if the program were discontinued, students would have to somehow pick up the missing credit(s) in senior year. In addition, the Academy course is weighted in students' GPAs. To take it away and replace it with a non-weighted course would put these students at an immediate and unfair disadvantage in class rank calculations, which could have implications for opportunities for college admissions. Their schedules would have to be changed at the last minute, and trying to accommodate PE or tech credits and extra weighted courses would affect already selected courses and disrupt carefully made academic plans. Students who complete the program also earn basic firefighting and EMT certification, but if the program were halted now, current participants would have to “start over” at the community college level. There are three ways parents can help: 1) e-mail City Council to request continued funding for Firefighter Academy, at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/council/groupemail.htm; 2) attend the City’s budget work sessions (July 28, Aug. 4, Aug. 18, and Aug. 25); and/or 3) register to speak at the hearings set for July 29, Aug. 5, Aug. 19, and Aug.26. To register go to http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/cityclerk/m_rules.htm. Our students need our help to keep this program running so that they can graduate on time with the basic EMT and firefighter certifications promised by the program. Please show your support, even if your student is not in this program, because of its value to our students and community: keep the Firefighter Academy going!

Important 2010-11 School Year Information
All Students Look over your schedule and make sure you have been scheduled into a class for 1st through 8th period for both semesters and that all before and after school classes that you want on your schedule are there. If you have a hole in your schedule, it is because you either do not have enough classes or there is a scheduling conflict. If this applies to you or you have proof of enrollment or credit for a course that is currently on your schedule then you need to attend the Take Care of Business Early Days (TCBE) or Freshmen Orientation to make schedule changes. LASA’s Master Schedule is now complete and any schedule changes other than those listed above will not be honored. You will need to report to your Forum class at the beginning of the school day for the first two days of school. Forum classroom assignments will be posted on the walls around the building. The bell schedule for the first week of school will be a CCCAB rotation. The bell schedule will have Forum first, then periods 1 through 8 for two days. Wednesday will be a regular “C” day, Thursday will be an “A” day (1, 3, 5, and 7) and Friday will be a “B” day (2, 4, 6, and 8). Lockers have not yet been pre-assigned. Students enrolled in Band are to see the band directors in order to obtain a locker in the band hall area. You will not be able to store your books in your locker until the first day of school. You are responsible for providing your own lock for the locker. If you take occupancy in a locker that is not assigned to you, the lock will be cut off and all items collected without warning. All other locker questions or concerns need to be directed towards Mrs. Meyer. The District will be mailing out student course requests to all students within the next two weeks. Please disregard that mailing. LASA TCBE Days Students will be able to take their ID picture, sign up for a parking permit, check out textbooks, and make changes to their schedule.
