The problem about commodification of Reog Ponorogo festival performance because of the
presence of tourism industry is examined within this research. It is true that tourism industry has
brought commodification into the realm of Reog Ponorogo practitioners. This commodification
process is then producing a change within Reog Ponorogo performance.
Buck Morsss theory is used as the analysis tool to understand what the change is within
Reog performance after commodification process. Various concepts such as tourism, art, Reog
Ponorogo, representation and awareness are also used to discuss the problem.
Commodification process within Reog performance cannot be separable from the role of
agent causing this change. Based on Buck Morsss commodification theory, agents who involve
within commodification process within Reog Ponorogo festival performance are mostly Reog
practitioners (such as artists, tourism performers, and privates).
Commodification of Reog festival performance in the tourism industry is occurred when the
story line within Reog performance is patented, when scene esthetic is introduced, and when
arrangements, instruments, makeup and signage of Reog performance, are redefined. By then, Reog
is then becoming a commodity that is available to be sold in market, and it is commodified to allow
it to be preserved and accepted by wider communities. Being realized or not, people of Ponorogo
have maintained this culture as their ethnical identity and positioned this culture as the commodity.
